Manic Monday

August 22nd, 2005

The movers are en route. They said they’d be here somewhere between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. today. Which means that I’m not really expecting them to show up until 8 p.m. this evening. Or maybe tomorrow. If we’re lucky.

We get on the road to Florida on Wednesday. Our entire lives have been reduced to 42 UHaul boxes. I’m too numb with all of the agony of packing to really care about the significance of the life change we’re undertaking. However, I’m pretty damn upbeat for a pissy curmudgeon like myself.

The cat isn’t doing so well. Poor thing senses our stress and is wandering the halls screaming like nobody’s business. I keep trying to snuggle him and dose him with flower essences – I feel like a disingenuous closet hippie who has resorted to last-ditch homeopathic measures. And, well, that’s exactly what I am. Walnut essence supposedly imparts a feeling of calm in the waves of change. I’ve been dosing myself as much as him. Frankly, I think the fact that the essence is suspended in brandy is far more effective than the essence itself.

We land in Florida on Saturday, three days after driving with the cat – who refuses to hold down any sort of sedative, from Dramamine to Benadryl – and will no doubt scream, cry and pee for 30 straight hours on the highway, in ten different states. Let me know if you hear us. I’ll be crying as loudly as he’s wailing.

Wish us luck, and catch you on the other side.

I hate the crying wandering cat! It makes me feel like such a villain. Is he making the “mwo” sound? I hate the “mwo” sound.

    Good luck sweetie!
Travelling with a crying, screaming cat will be good practise for when the babies come heh!

Make sure you let me know your address. I’ll moo-you.

Hey there – safe travels. Your cat will survive; both of mine did (though we had to don what we still jokingly call “the beekeeper’s outfit” – aka my husband’s leather jacket worn backwards as well as a pair of wire-cutting gloves – to handle one, my Abysinnian, while en route) as did our gets-carsick-OFTEN dog. Recommended roadstops off I-95 (assuming you’re taking the direct route) include Rocky Mount, North Carolina; just take care, if you happen to visit the Walmart there to pick up a spare toothbrush or whatnot, to VERY CAREFULLY follow the road signs when heading back to your hotel/motel/Holiday Inn. I did not and ended up “cruising” the local backroads and tarpits in a fully loaded Ryder truck in near pitch dark for quite some time. Overall, on the big plus side, the trip down alone (i.e. not even counting the return one we made less than 12 months later) provided me with enough material for one full-length screenplay. Yes, it’s true! :) You’ll have a blast, you and your husband. Be safe and best to you!

What an exciting time. Hope you can handle all the driving. Drove from Utah to Minnesota and back TWICE in the last 6 months. Two and a half days…I feel your pain, but you too will survive.

Good luck and I hope the movers surprise you!!!

Good luck! This is so exciting, and we’ll all be waiting on pins and needles to find out how it all went. Thinking of you!

Good luck! Play lots of Erasure really loud the whole way down, so you don’t have to hear the cat…

Jonniker, you can get a very light valium from your vet for the cat, to keep him calm. It will work better than flower essences. My vet gave us a very low valium (Diazepam) for Teddie this year.

Hope the new digs are steller and you’ve invited KLS to your housewarming party!
