Egg Raid on Mojo

April 18th, 2007

I kind of feel like a jerk for not mentioning the whole sordid disaster that is this week, but quite frankly, I’m pretty sucky about talking about those kinds of things, I have very little original commentary, and it’s everywhere. That being said, and I’m not trying to make light of the situation, but I’d have given a very large sum of money to see Katie Couric’s face when she heard that NBC got the manifesto. I got a bit of a macabre chuckle imagining her beating her perfectly coiffed head on her desk screaming “WHY BRIAN WHY?” while her tiny fists beat against the table in unmitigated fury.

Oh, Katie. So sorry. You never should have left Today.

That being said, today was a pretty good day in my neck of the woods, and I think that’s what life is supposed to be about – being grateful for that sort of thing, I mean. I don’t mean that as any disrespect to anyone or anything, but it’s all too easy to let this stuff send me into a bald panic and spend my days under the covers, afraid to come out, because the world is just so scary. And honestly, every time there’s a major tragedy of sorts, I wonder if having kids is the best idea, because God, I’m just introducing them into a world that is inherently fucked.

But then again, it’s really not like that at all. I really do believe that people are mostly good, and that we should notice the happy stuff as much as the bad, no matter how small it is. I don’t mean to go all Pollyanna on anyone, but again, it’s kind of what you have to do I think, if you’re going to make it.

And so, without further adieu, three really fabulous things that happened to me today, in order of their occurrence:

- As soon as I got to work, I discovered a music fairy (okay, a masculine music fairy) had left the song I was complaining I couldn’t find yesterday right in my inbox. And it was such an easy little thing, but honestly, it made my morning.

- One of my freelance clients sent me a package along with my check full of all kinds of girlie scents and products (of the pampering variety, not feminine hygiene). Even before they did this, I can’t tell you what a pleasure it’s been to work for this couple. I’m pretty sure they think I’m kissing their ass, as I tell them all the time, but I’ve never worked for such nice, competent, appreciative people in my entire career.

- I ended the day with six points, and spent them on a giant bowl of Skinny Cow ice cream and Cool Whip, with a chaser of popcorn while watching TV (LOST!) with my (very cute and very, very funny, if slightly ill and feverish) husband and dog.

I hate to go all “your turn!” with this, because it never seems to work out. I write about menstrual protection or music, and y’all come out in droves. I go for a happy little reader-response and everyone panics, but I’ll do it anyway: tell me one good thing about your day today. Hand it over.

*Beastie Boys. Because, for the frillionth time, someone told me today that my husband reminds them of “a Beastie Boy – I can’t remember which one!” Most often it’s Mike D, and I don’t really see it, mainly because mine is much, much cuter.

Glad your day sent some blessings your way. (Did I just channel a Ziggy cartoon?)

Let’s see, one good thing that happened to me today… I taught a class full of college students and didn’t get blown away. (It’s amazing how your perspective on “good things” changes following someone else’s tragic misfortune.) Actually, I can’t even get my head around that whole event, as it hits disturbingly close to home, and I don’t know what to say about it (yet).

I guess the best thing that happened to me today was hearing my baby daughter say two fun words for the first time: purple (puh-poh) and cowgirl (cah-goh).

Having someone (nudge!) say that my husband looks like Gael Garcia Bernal.

    Hee.

I totally try to see the good and the beauty in every day and in people, even when I’m a lump of cranky. So I’m right there with you, Pollyanna.

My good moment of the day so far (12:47pm & counting down)…someone at work left the Silverchair `Live from Faraway Stables’ box set on my desk…I was all pissed off at Quickflix (aka Netflix) for sending me too many Scrubs episodes instead of the Silverchair discs and now I can watch both :)

We actually had a lovely day today – we went to an art museum, all 3 of us, and everyone behaved and enjoyed themselves.

You could have it worse, my husband insists that when he shaves his head he looks like Bull from Night Court. I think it’s only because they’re both ridiculously circus-tall.

Hmmm…I submitted my column well before deadline today, which is highly unusual for me. I have five points (!!!) left over and an hour in which to use ‘em, if I so choose. And somehow I’m not feeling deprived! Oh, and I’ve been watching “Dead Like Me” – if you’ve never seen it, you MUST. You’ll like it. It’s hilarious and poignant without being twee.

One lovely thing about today for me? I finally took a picture of myself that I don’t hate to put on my blog. And that, it seems, is worthy of celebration.

The sun was shining and it was WARM. That’s all it took to make my day :)

I bought a pair of Levi’s in a smaller size AND a Star magazine. WOOT.

DH brought me home dinner (Mickey D’s b/c I’m pms-ing), I got *4* packages put together (always a feat for me), and I received a lovely package in the mail! Really, though, any day I accomplish something I’ve been putting off is a better-than-average day.

All the Weight Watchers posts inspired me to try to find my lifetime membership number from 1989 and get back on the wagon. When I couldn’t find it, I called the Weight Watchers toll free number to get it and found out I’m only 3 pounds from the suggested goal weight for my age and height. You can’t imagine how that shocked me.

Erm…my good thing: I found a swimsuit that I am prepared to consider wearing. In public. Of course, I’d prefer to wear it weighing 10 pounds less, but I will say that I’m very much in favor of the little skirty thing as a bottom piece for the unfortunately named “tankini.”

The really good-no-great thing for me about the swimsuit, though, is that it was purchased in the first place because I’m going on a trip with my sister (our first ever grown-up, just-us trip) to RENO, to see MORRISSEY OMG OMG OMG.

I finally made a batch of chicken scampi that turned out how I imagine it’s supposed to turn out.

And I learned that Sanjaya can finally go home where he belongs. I’d started to feel sorry for the guy.

Um I totally scored 212 on a bowling video game that I’ve never scored more than 176 on in the *months* I’ve been playing it. Yes,I totally hollered when I saw my final score. Me=nerd.

  • 14. Swistle  |  April 19th, 2007 at 4:51 am

I…uh. Let’s see. A good thing about today. Uh. I got all the barf smell out of the car seat, I THINK. Can we go back to talking about menstrual cups?

  • 15. TwoBusy  |  April 19th, 2007 at 5:47 am

Someone called me a masculine fairy.

  • 16. Sadie  |  April 19th, 2007 at 5:55 am

A good thing about last night: I won an eBay auction for something very scarce and expensive and difficult to get, and it’s going to make the COOLEST GIFT EVAH for my boyfriend. Oh, and I ate french fries for the first time in months and WOW, are french fries delicious.

  • 17. Claire  |  April 19th, 2007 at 6:05 am

I got an email from an old work-friend who i haven’t heard from in a long while and it was so nice to catch up with her.

But mostly, yesterday was great because Sanjaya went home. Sad? Yes.
    but hooray.

  • 18. Jamie  |  April 19th, 2007 at 6:27 am

I managed to run an entire 5K on the treadmill and not die, and I got two responses on some Craigslist stuff I am selling to pay down Switzerland-related credit card debt. Woohoo!

  • 19. Suebob  |  April 19th, 2007 at 7:31 am

This post was written yesterday, so is the good thing a yesterday thing, or a today thing? It is still pretty early for good stuff today.

OH! Here is my great thing. I bought the new car and have been wanking about how am I going to make the payment etc. Well I looked at my tax withholding and realized that my company was still withholding more more money than they needed to (I had asked them to last year when it made sense and they didn’t change it automatically Jan 1 as I had presumed they would)…so suddenly I get more money in my paycheck. Not quite a car payment worth, but with that and the gas I am saving by having a new, tiny, fuel-efficient car, I think it will all be even.

    Hallelujah.

Since yesterday was my birthday, lots of good things happened. I got the phone call I look forward to every year from my best friend who lives in new york. (Not that he doesn’t call on other days, too — I just know I can always count on him for a “happy birthday” call.) I ate lunch with my husband at my favorite burrito place. I got home to a lovely dinner cooked by my husband, followed by a delicious dessert. It was, overall, a very fabulous day!

  • 21. mar  |  April 19th, 2007 at 8:27 am

i’m gonna go with yesterday. not enough time for today’s good things.
my bf picked me up after work, drove me by a place we’re looking at for our 1st apartment that would only be 15 minutes walk from work (i currently walk 30 one way) and then he gave me half his chocolate chip biscotti because all i’d eaten all day was a juicebox, string cheese & hard boiled egg. he’s amazing!

Oy. Wednesday was a little tough. But I did get a great big box of unsolicited Max Factor shwag because I posted a good review of one of their mascaras on the blog. Therer’s very little that happens to me on a day-to-day basis that a new lippie can’t at least mitigate.

  • 23. jonniker  |  April 19th, 2007 at 9:28 am

I should have clarified: today OR yesterday, when I wrote it. Pick one! Or both! Hooray!

  • 24. Andrea  |  April 19th, 2007 at 9:56 am

Digging through to find something good. Yesterday was monumentally bad and today is turning into just the same but I won’t be a party pooper so I’ll find something.

My son is doing better with the potty training. I’ve been rewarding with candy, and as annoying as it is to be told every five seconds that he has to potty because he wants some SweetTarts it’s kinda funny, too. I should have tried the candy approach a long time ago.

Also, he hugged me last night and said, “Mama, I love you. I’m really glad you’re here. You’re my best friend.” What’s not to love about that? Not only that, but after the news we received yesterday, that was quite a pick me up.

I got a haircut with a new hairdresser I love and who also keeps the wine flowing while she cuts and blows out my hair….then, a random guy we met at a brewery while having dinner picked up our tab – just to be neighborly!

  • 26. Gentry  |  April 19th, 2007 at 1:10 pm

I had a lovely lunch and a great table in the cute shadey courtyard at Hotel Amour with the guy who looks like Tom Ford

  • 27. Stacy  |  April 19th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

90 minute massage. Now I feel like me again and not like the crazy woman that was inhabiting my body. Heaven.

  • 28. Anne L.  |  April 19th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

Hmmm… one good thing about my (crappy) 11 hour day. OK… one of the younger girls I work with thought that I was making dessert tart shells out of animal crackers… my little personal snack bag was dumped out on the table nearby. (not too close, though! Promise!) OK, after 11 hours, maybe that was only funny to me, but I had a good belly laugh out of picturing the snooty-snoots we’ll be serving tomorrow night some animal cracker tarts.

  • 29. Meepers  |  April 19th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

    Ok…good thing(s) about today/yesterday:

We finally located (and my husband is bringing home as I, erm, write… a new, proper-sized fridge for our lovely tenant.) I know. How thrilling…appliances.

    Oh!oh! I know! but shhhh…

Got lucky for the first time in a week. Siiigh. I hate when he’s sick.

  • 30. Dana  |  April 19th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

I got my favorite brand of smoked salmon on sale.
I knitted something that, for once, didn’t look like I did it with my feet.
    Ok Go is on Leno.

    Rockin’!

  • 31. Amanda  |  April 19th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

I weighed myself and am out of the 150s (albeit, by only 1/8 of a pound, but STILL). Only 20 more to go…gah.

  • 32. Pattie  |  April 20th, 2007 at 11:07 am

I was able to have a margarita with lunch today. That was pretty good!

  • 33. Jennifer  |  April 20th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

At 4am this morning (after WORKING half the night), I decided to just say “screw all you guys” (I’m addressing the company I work for), and just freekin took the day off. I dawdled around the coffeeshop, went to the library, read some blogs, and enjoyed the nice weather. I haven’t even checked email, and I don’t even care!

I also spent a good portion of this day off seriously figuring out how I can quit this high stress job and still bring home some kind of salary. I may finally be motivated enough to do it rather than just wish to do it.

    Have a great weekend!

  • 34. Laurel  |  April 22nd, 2007 at 7:38 pm

My bf kissed my head on three different occassions out of utter cuteness and he bought me Subway for dinner. It was the perfect end to a lazy sunday.
