Film One

May 20th, 2007

We’ve reached the time of year where I’m envious of anyone who lives above the Mason-Dixon line, as most of you are probably really looking forward to summer, with Memorial Day next weekend and all. I’m imagining you may live in a climate where you can step outside without a) your face melting off; b) getting eaten alive by any number of mosquitoes and/or fire ants; or c) cowering in fear of spontaneous lightning that could sizzle your undies off, leaving nothing but you exsiccated corpse, reminiscent of a dried-out cockroach carcass.

And I won’t even mention hurricane season because I just can’t, but oh, the season of terror is upon us, and by terror, I actually mean the weather is a terrorist of sorts, haunting us with what it might do, and while yes, it’s entirely possible that we could all be wiped out with a strong gust of wind, the likelihood is still very slim. (Or if it’s not, do me a favor and keep it to yourself and leave me to my light breezy illusions, hmmm?)

Anyway, it was Adam’s birthday this weekend, and to say he wanted it low-key is like saying that Kermit and Miss Piggy don’t belong together (they totally do, and Muppets Take Manhattan remains one of my favorite movies, and I know how wrong that sounds), and the biggest thrill we had all weekend was some wild Flex Points spending on some nachos and beer, because no one really knows how to party like we do. Nobody.

There was, however, some excitement on Friday when we finally bit the bullet and bought an SLR. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me, because my last camera was a Canon PowerShot that took one picture approximately every two to three minutes at its fastest. Not to mention the fact that the process of actually taking a photo involved pushing the button and then promptly falling asleep while the camera heavily debated the merits of actually taking a picture vs. crapping out entirely, and by the time it actually fired, the subject you were focusing on was on a plane heading for the Virgin Islands.

For those of you who care about such things, we went with a Nikon D40, the reasons for which are relatively simple: I liked the price and quality of the kit lens vs. the Canon Digital Rebel (emphasis on price), and I use a Nikon D70 for work which, while it’s way too much camera for me, made me comfortable enough with the Nikon. Ultimately, however, we cheated and asked Adam’s friends who founded this company and we figured, meh, they probably know what they’re talking about more than we do, so Nikon it is. And I love it, for the simplest of reasons, most of which are centered solely around the fact that when I push a button it actually takes a picture.

Dude, she’s running towards me. And she’s in focus. It’s a miracle!

Finally, and this is sort of pathetic, I need new bras. I realized today that I haven’t bought a new bra in (oh my God) at least two or three years, and honestly, I haven’t the foggiest idea where to start. I am not particularly…large… (34B, because I overshare and am unstoppable) so it’s not like I need a truckload of support, but my ever-shrinking form continues to take away from the bustline, so needing new bras was inevitable. Although, um, two years between bra purchases? Not so good.

The bra(s) I wear at the moment is a Victoria’s Secret Body By Victoria Ipex wireless thing, I think, and honestly, while I love it, I hate Victoria’s Secret and am largely against it on principle (up yours, Adriana Lima!). So, if you wouldn’t mind sharing, I’ll take your bra recommendations, please. I hate underwires, but if you must, I understand. And if you can’t be specific, I’m down with where you’ve had good luck buying decent bras in the sub-$40 range, preferably, unless they’re made of gold ingots that can be resold at a higher value and/or make me look like Adriana Lima herself.

Happy Monday!

That is so weird: my husband is in the other room watching Muppets Take Manhattan RIGHT THIS MINUTE.

    Funny about the camera!

i’m all about the target bras or a madienform outlet (or other such store). i’m a huge underwire fan but that’s because while my girls and i are north of the mason dixon line now, they certainly won’t stay that way as the years progress…

I am totally loving the Maidenform Lite Demi (#9409 at macys). It covers, does not add a ton with weird padding, and is super light weight. Makes the girls look sooo good.

I hate Victoria’s Secret. So much hate.

Try this one – I love it. In fact, I’m wearing it right now, RAWR!

I love the Nikon D40! And I feel the need to say that because I feel the need to tell everybody how much I love something when I love something. (One of my many defects.) So I have done my job here.

    Happy snapping.

I hope that by now you’ve forgiven me for the whole Twitter thing. With that, let me know how you like the D40, I just added it to my Amazon wishlist. I enjoy it for the same reasons as you, the whole kit thing and it seems pretty easy to use for an SLR, which is pretty much what I want/need right now.

    Heather: Oh dude, TWITTER. HEH.

It’s worth noting, I did not go for the D40x, which came with an extra Nikkor zoom lens and a speedlight flash. It also had a couple of extra megapixels, I think. We didn’t get it, because a) it was $200 more; b) I honestly don’t need any more megapixels. I think at a certain point it just becomes stupid; and c) neither the bundled speedlight, nor the zoom lens were rated that highly, and since I don’t need both right this minute, I opted to save the $200 and buy them on my own later (I have a decent speedlight I can use for now anyway). I’m not sure if they’re still making the D40 as a standalone kit, as they were low in stock many places, which makes me happy that I got it when I did.

Also, for what it’s worth, I bought it at Best Buy, who will match any retailer’s price, provided you can find it and bring it in printed out. So, lesson: you can get the convenience of Best Buy without their overinflated prices if you look hard enough.

Also, I LIKE the Digital Rebel a lot. Really liked it. But again, it was a little more camera than I need right now, and with that extra camera came extra money that I’d rather spend on a peripheral.

I have a bra recommendation. I just bought a bunch of Calvin Klein bras and find them quite comfortable. If you prefer no underwire they have one called the Perfectly Fit Wireless Contour model #F2781. It can convert to a racerback if needed and it is lightly lined so no headlight action but no major marshmallow padding either. I found that even though it doesn’t have underwire it still gives me “lift”. I compared my profile against other wired and padded models, yup I did. I purchased a couple of their underwires too and they are still comfy for me, I am not chesty. I have bought these bras in the past and they wash up well and last a long time. I have nowire, underwire, racerback and strapless in the Calvin Klein, mainly because it comes in my size, 32B, hard to find and fit. Should be easy to find, pretty common name, got mine at Macy’s. Yeah, I’m not a rep for Calvin Klein but I have gone on longer and with more enthusiasm about this then I had thought. Happy Shopping!

The Hanes site (I know, Hanes doesn’t exactly make you think “sexy lingerie!) has some pretty comfy bras, including NONunderwire ones…but the absolutely best part is the price…usually along the lines 10 bucks or so. So while I think a lot of the other lingerie lines have nice stuff, I’ve been totally ruined by the Hanes price and can no longer bring myself to pay $40 or more for a bra.
And I know a lot of people won’t buy clothing online because they can’t try it on first, but I’m much too lazy to try things on in the store first either, so I just buy online anyway. One time when something didn’t fit, I actually got around to shipping it back to Hanes…they promptly credited me for it, too.

    Exsiccated?

    (whistling in admiration)

  • 11. p|b  |  May 21st, 2007 at 6:10 am

    G A P all THE WAY.
They rock – and gap always has sales and clearance prints, so you end up getting them for 10 bucks!! (this happened to me last week, it’s the closest I will ever come to winning the lottery) Anyway I don’t really NEED the underwire, however I can’t feel it in this bra and it adds a little more structure in a soft t-shirt…

Finding the perfect bra is like searching for the holy grail.
    Good luck, and God speed.

i have no bra recommendations because i, too, am lost when it comes to them and tend to wear mine for much longer than i should, as evidenced by the total lack of support i have right now. also am larger in the rack area, so i need industrial strength elastic and underwire. hooray for boobies. so sexy.

  • 13. Jessica  |  May 21st, 2007 at 7:26 am

Definitely Maidenform. They have great sales online, but also sell them at Ross, Marshall’s and the like. If you can find an outlet, also a good way to go.

  • 14. Aim  |  May 21st, 2007 at 8:00 am

I’ll also chime in on the Calvin Klein bra rave. I’m only a 34A myself, but I go ahead & do the underwire thing because it makes me feel like a big girl. If they’re good and they fit properly, they’re really not uncomfortable. Also, Jockey & Hanes both good. Plus, all of the above-mentioned have outlets, so if you’re anywhere near an outlet mall, you can get ‘em cheap.

Why are bras so expensive, anyway? There’s not exactly a lot of materials required. Is all the money going into R&D, or what?

  • 15. Susan  |  May 21st, 2007 at 9:14 am

No advice on brands but…. get a professional fitting! You may find that the size you’ve been wearing all these years is not your true size. A properly fitted bra can make you look great. Our local Macy’s has someone who does fittings any time.

Also, I had to go buy some Mike’s Hard Berry Lemonade this weekend. Reading about it so much made it oddly appealing.

  • 16. Shellie  |  May 21st, 2007 at 10:13 am

Right now at work I’m wearing a hanes cotton sports bra that I got on sale at Walgreens. I’m 36A – or so I thought until everything got uncomfortable. The hanes barely there are ok. I used to wear Victoria Secret items. I hate Victoria Secret. I cannot find the perfect bra.

I almost have the ladies here at work considering the moon cup. I haven’t gotten one yet but I will!

  • 17. jonniker  |  May 21st, 2007 at 10:17 am

Susan, I’m totally going for a fitting this week. TOTALLY. Thank you for the heads up as to where I can go.

Shellie: Oh yes. It’s lovely, really, and I sound like a zealot, but I don’t care. HOWEVER, I will e-mail you separately of a disaster I had with the M.C. It was hideous. HIDEOUS. But not the MC’s fault.

  • 18. Kristin  |  May 21st, 2007 at 11:16 am

whaaat? a disaster with the M.C.? But I have been considering buying one, and I need to know! do tell, please!

  • 19. jonniker  |  May 21st, 2007 at 11:23 am

    Well.

Since you asked, and what the hell, others may benefit from this disaster.

I have a thyroid problem, which manifests itself in…heavy periods at times, if my levels are off. I think a slight tweak in my levels, along with a strange, freakish period that was OVERWHELMINGLY HEAVY SWEET JESUS, and yet was only two days, was the culprit, but honestly, I, ah, filled the cup in an hour. Twice. While wearing khakis. The day after bragging about its wonders. For the first time in my adult life, I had to go to Target (the closest store) in the middle of a workday and buy the world’s ugliest skirt, because it was just. that. bad. I carried my bag behind me to block the disaster that was unfolding before the world’s eyes, because oh, IT WAS UNFOLDING.

The thing is, with tampons, I would have seen it coming – you can FEEL when things are getting out of control down there, whereas with the cup, you have no warning until disaster strikes. Granted, most normal people would never in a bofrillion years have this problem, as it is very specific to my odd little body chemistry, but oh man, it was awful, just awful, and one of the grossest things I’ve ever had to deal with, ever.

  • 20. Beth  |  May 21st, 2007 at 11:44 am

My new favorite place for bras: Ross. I swear, I found all kinds of name brand bras there for under ten bucks apiece. There’s nothing wrong with them — just discontinued or whatever. I had to try on a bunch, but I’ll prolly never buy bras anywhere else again.

  • 21. Meepers  |  May 21st, 2007 at 1:03 pm

Beth beat me to it – and I have a sometimes hard-to-find size: 34/6 (really like a 35…but they don’t make that size, do they?) D. Yet I still manage to find cute, comfy bras at Ross.

I *knew* there must be some hidden issue with the mooncup. I have the thyroid/always heavy period thing too, and would expect disaster to lurk around every corner.

More puppy pictures, ppppwwweaaase! The tongue is so. darn. cute.

  • 22. Melissa  |  May 21st, 2007 at 6:03 pm

Call me cheap, but the best bras I’ve found lately have been at Target, Let me just grab one off the doorknob here and see who the manufacturer is … Gilligan & O’Malley, and the print on the closure (no tag!) says Ultimate. They were in the $12 range, and I am very pleased with the comfort and support, Because A cups need a lot of support – you didn’t know?

    Great camera, great Sunny picture!

[...] And while we’re on the topic of underthings, I bought new bras, thanks to your recommendations, and though I’m loathe to admit this, I found myself in Victoria’s Secret, because the Macy’s girl was all but feeling me up and breathing down my neck without actually coming up with a realistic bra size, and I was desperate to wear a black shirt again, and somewhere, in a giant black hole of suck, my black bras are having a party that involves tequila and someone else’s boobs. Also, they were having a sale, and their bras were cheap AND, just to tack more on to this caveat, one of my best real-life friends (go kiss her belly, because she’s awesome) recommended the Secret Embrace which is precisely what I ended up with, and I have to say, Erica was right. I still hate Adriana Lima and Victoria’s Secret, I just made an exception out of loyalty and desperation, or at least that’s what I’m telling myself. But I’m quite happy with the two I bought. Next up: Gap’s wireless push-up bra, thanks to Whoorl. [...]
