Round Here

August 26th, 2007

Oh gawd. Well. Friday night, after reading the bojillion comments about Ben Folds’ “The Luckiest,” which I’ve owned for years, but honestly never really listened to (thank you, skip function), because I vacillate wildly on Ben Folds, I gave it a listen. See, on the one hand, I really dig him, but in truth, I like him on quirky irreverent songs, and can’t quite take him seriously on any sort of love song level, despite a rather steamy dream to the contrary a few years ago. His voice can be a bit twee for my taste, especially when he’s singing about something oh-so-serious and a little romantic, and even as I write this, my lips are curled like I took a whiff of Sunny’s morning breath, because ew, Ben Folds, you annoy me sometimes.

He’s just … well, he’s too precious for me, I guess, and I’ll admit a mere perfunctory listen to the first five or six bars of “The Luckiest,” before promptly hitting skip for about four years now. Except, shit, that ending? It brought me to a bit of snarfling right there in bed, which both freaked out and irritated Adam, and prompted a bit of panic, because he really didn’t expect to end the day hearing his wife snorfle and wheeze over nothing important. Incidentally, I had the same reaction the day I listened — actually listened — to the lyrics to Peter Gabriel’s “No Way Out” and started to imagine Adam’s bloody body on the ground and when combined with the PMS I was already feeling, there quite a bit of was sobbing in bed, because Adam, don’t leave me here again! Don’t leave me like this! I’M NOT QUITTING ON YOU! THERE’S NO WAY OUT!

Speaking of Adam, he’s currently reading a book on modern interpretations of American history, and for the last week or so, he’s been peppering conversation with delightful facts gleaned along the way, and if you didn’t think Paul Revere could be brought up in regular day’s activities, you were sorely mistaken. He is much more relevant than I anticipated, and any discussion can be used as a springboard, apparently. (“That two if by sea thing went over like a lead balloon!”) Thank you, Dr. History.

Aside from unprovoked history lessons, our weekend was astonishingly low-key, and involved lots of laying about, some Hot Fuzz and some freelance work, which brings me to the irritating Law of Freelance Work. Whenever a big freelance project comes up, I am inevitably kicked in the head with a large unexpected bill or–my personal favorite–several large bills. Previous incarnations have included dental bills, physical therapy deductibles and, yes, our friends the IRS. Saturday, I landed a new freelance project, and within two hours, was promptly handed two unexpected events that directly negate the cost of the project. Ha ha. HA HA!

Granted, one was an iPod death that I’ve been expecting for about a year now, given that I’d bought mine in 2004, which is apparently LIGHT YEARS in iPod life. And yes, while many would argue that it’s not a necessity on the level of, say, the oxygen sensor that needed to be replaced in my car, aside from my laptop, my iPod is the one accessory I use every day, so, ah, there you have it. And welcome Rhonda, my new iPod, to the family! Hello, Rhonda! Incidentally, I played with the iPhone while picking her up, and I wasn’t that impressed. I mean, it’s pretty and all, but after all the hype, I expected the phone to strip naked and clean my toilets.

Don’t get me wrong — I’m grateful. I’m thrilled that I have the work, and that even with these two events, I’m breaking even, it’s just that once, JUST ONCE, I’d like to have extra wads of unexpected cash lying about to do something wild and crazy with. You know, like depositing them in a money market account, because again, as a Capricorn, that’s as nuts as I get, and sometimes–and this is really off the hook–I forget to sign the deposit slip. Whooo!

And finally, we’re being plagued by spiders, just PLAGUED, like it’s some sort of insane spider season or something, for despite a clean house and mad vacuuming, I’m killing up to two a day. Except tonight, as I was taking off my shoe to give one the old smack-and-scream, Sunny got a glimpse of him and snorfled him up like a piece of kibble. And yes, she kisses her mother with that mouth.

Happy Monday to you! I hope your weekend was much more exciting.

How was Hot Fuzz? I have been wanting to see it for a long time but haven’t been able to get around to it yet.

  • 2. Jennie  |  August 26th, 2007 at 7:29 pm

    Happy Monday to you, too!

I was just talking about Counting Crows the other day. I think my favorite of theirs is “Holiday in Spain.”

Spiders have invaded our home too.

-R-: Personally, I thought Hot Fuzz was nothing short of awesome. It was smart, funny and utterly ridiculous and stupid in that way that only smart-dumb movies can. If you liked Shaun of the Dead, which I did, oh yes, I did so very much, then you’ll love Hot Fuzz. And I also think Simon Pegg is hot.

Also, Jennie, my favorite Counting Crows song will always be Anna Begins. I don’t think they’ve ever matched the wonder of that first album.

Counting Crows = favorites ever, largely thanks to Round Here (incidentally, the ridiculously long acoustic live version, first). And definitely all the throttle of American Girls.

Rhonda? Like Big Love‘s Rhonda? Who – gasp – stole an iPod in Season One??
I am terrified of the thought of the untimely death of my poor Demitrius. I had help from my parents to buy him in the first place, and I’m pretty sure that ship’s sailed. (“I ride the T 45 mins to work or school! iPod = savior! pleeease!”) The deaths of your iPod and my friend’s recently make me think I need to start an emergency fund like, now.

Woah, good call Style Bard. That Rhonda – Big Love – iPod thing totally slipped by me.

I love that Adam comment about the history – non sequiturs. I think that’s hilarious. Thank you, Dr. History. HA!

I want very much to say that Rhonda was so named after Rhonda Volmer, but the sad truth is that her predecessor’s name was Rodney, and for reasons unknown, this one was clearly a female. Ergo, Rhonda.

re: Ben Folds, I honestly don’t think I have ever heard another song by him (them?), and I don’t think I really care to… but I had the same snorfling reaction the first time I listened to the lyrics of The Luckiest and that is why I love it so.

Don’t even joke about not signing the depost slip. I put a check into the ATM in one of those deposit envelopes a few weeks back and realized on the way home that I forgot to fill out the envelope. I freaked about it until Monday when I was able to call the bank, despite Matt’s assurances that NO ONE fills out the envelope you crazy woman.

Anna Begins is incredible. In fact, you’ve made me pull out my “August and Everything After” CD to listen to this morning.

  • 9. TwoBusy  |  August 27th, 2007 at 9:56 am

And the predecessor iPod’s name was Rodney because..?

  • 10. jonniker  |  August 27th, 2007 at 10:00 am

TB: I … I don’t know. I really have no idea how it started or why, as I’m not usually one to name my appliances or even my car, but Rodney seemed to fit after a while, and now we have Rhonda. Adam has cobbled together a skeleton of Rodney after playing it for a while, and plans to adopt him as his own for now. He is also wholly displeased at his name, and I doubt he plans to keep it.

i always fill out the envelope.
love, love, loved hot fuzz! my mother did as well, but she totally disliked shaun of the dead. crazy woman!
my weekend was so much more thrilling with the giant black ants that have taken up residence (where are they coming from? they’re in the kitchen, the living room, my bedroom. no wonder i’ve spent the weekend at my bf’s place.) luckily only two or three at a time, but seriously? and then the wisdom teeth pain causing me to be on 800mg of tylenol. i’m 28 & the dentist said there was no need to take them out. besides the excruciating pain i’ve gone through since i turned 19 & they came in the first time (then receded and came back 2 more times over the past decade). grrr…

    2 things:

    1) A dog can have no higher calling than the killing of icky bugs. Go, Sunny.

    2) My husband was in Ben Folds Five. Ergo, it IS INDEED a small world.

  • 13. Heath  |  August 27th, 2007 at 5:14 pm

Oh I forgot – I had THREE things. Hot Fuzz is hysterical. I am going to buy it as soon as humanly possible. I have a crush on BOTH Simon Pigott and Nick Frost. (I am a whore.)

  • 14. Gentry  |  August 28th, 2007 at 2:22 am

I wish I could train NapolĂ©on to eat bugs. He just barks at them then hides. Just like he does with cars, airplanes, other dogs, wind, trees, the cat, random molecules….

And I went out with a Himalayan, the early incarnation of the C0unting Cr0ws. He received $30,000 royalty checks every month just for writing a damn 4 note bass line. Do you see why I’ve started another band?

Goldie stuns bees. She snaps and catches them in her mouth, then releases them, confused and wet, where they lay still for a while, then buzz until their wings are dry, then fly off.

    Rinse and repeat.

Our lives have been completely taken over by spiders this year. I think it’s a worldwide plague.

  • 17. kerrianne  |  August 28th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

I’ve been dying! dying I say! to watch Hot Fuzz. Now I’m even more pumped. I was such a big fan of Shaun of the Dead, and even Simon’s cameo-like role in Mission Impossible 3, which I seemingly just admitted I watched. But hey, I dig the action. And Philip Seymour Hoffman.

  • 18. ali  |  August 28th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

my ipod is dying a slow death….and i’ve only had it for 2 years….fuckers don’t last very long, do they?

haven’t commented in awhile, still been reading. ablsolutely LOVE the blog…

    1 – i too, played the oboe.
2 – true companion AND the luckiest were played at my wedding.
3 – i love ben folds and bf5 greatly, although i outwardly cringe when people say “OMG, I LOVE THAT SONG BRICK!!!!!” that song is, quite possibly, the reason they never achieved more fame.
4 – i rented and watched hot fuzz and then immediately ran out to buy the damn thing so it could sit on my shelf next to shaun of the dead, thereby making me smile everytime i pass them.
5 – our dogs eat all bugs. the most disgusting? the shiba inu eating moths and cicadas. the last one? just WRONG to see.
