Out of Sight

September 12th, 2007

So, ha ha! Um, coke nail? As I said in comments, am I just too innocent for this world that I’ve never heard of this? Because that never occurred to me. Plus, if Schnozz hadn’t announced that it was to *snort* cocaine, I’d have thought it was to readily open Coke cans . Because I’ve been known to have that kind of Coke nail on my thumb, because who likes to rip off the last remaining shred of fingernail for some Coke Zero?

(Disclaimer: Schnozz is not a cokehead, she is very nice and normal, but is simply more worldly than me, lest I be accused of spreading false rumors. For real. I’ve met her.)

Also, it warms my little heart to see that so many of you abhor Sarah Silverman. I would make out with you all, but that would be wildly inappropriate.

And with that, I’m basically off for the weekend. I’m flying to the wilds of New Jersey tomorrow (Newark! Who doesn’t love Newark?) for a weekend with my family (my entire family, as my sister is also coming), and the wedding of a close friend. And the weekend after THAT, we’re staying at a fancypants hotel on the beach and going to a Red Sox game. Because we’re fancy like that, if you count “fancy” as not doing anything that requires any sort of movement whatsoever, save for maybe getting a beer and a hot dog, and falling asleep while Tim Wakefield pitches, because watching a knuckleball is akin to watching the slowest baseball in the entire world carefully, gingerly, S L O W L Y make its way to home plate. Unless, of course, Wake is having a tough night, in which case, you have the oh-so-painful experience of seeing a pitcher get shelled first-hand.

But! Save for the Sox game, it’s not likely there will be any fancypants anything. The last time we did this, we didn’t leave the hotel for more than 11 minutes at a time, because it was raining, the hotel had a spa, and did I mention there was a bathtub in front of the television?

I will be back before then, however, and hey! My work hell is ending! It’s OVER on Monday! Well, sort of, Monday. But it’s ending. Maybe Tuesday.

But first, a question to give me something to come back to … we’re looking to buy a new vacuum, and we’re finally ready to take the plunge on a decent one, because honestly, I’m sick of fixing our old ones, and we’ve been through four, count ‘em, FOUR, in the last two years, and that doesn’t count the two we fixed. I am done with cheap(ish) vacuums. Oreck? Dyson? Miele? Panasonic? Hit me with your vacuum recs. I will only say that I *hear* Dyson is overrated, but I know nothing from personal experience, so that could be like saying I heard Sarah Silverman is really funny, which we all know is not true.

Have a wonderful weekend. See you Monday! Hey, I may even have photos!

It would only be wildly inappropriate to make out with me without buying me a margarita beforehand.

Have a wonderful weekend! I love the makeout comment. Perfect when referencing anything Sarah Silverman. I have no advise on vacuums as I have never purchased one and that is the VERY. LAST. THING. that I would ever want to spend any kind of real money on. But, then again, I am 25 and have roommates who worry about those sorts of things. Good luck!

We returned the Dyson the day after we bought it and got the Miele instead. I can’t say enough about it. It’s so quiet I can talk on the phone while I vacuum and the person on the other end can’t even tell I’m vacuuming. Highly recommend the Miele despite the insane price.

I’m going to Newark this weekend as well. So if you happen to be out and about and um near Ikea and you see some girl wildly gesticulating at you then running away? That’d be me!

  • 5. Dawn  |  September 12th, 2007 at 8:32 pm

I love our Dyson. It was expensive, but we bought it at Costco and figured we could return it if it wasn’t worth the money. Personally I think it was worth every penny. Yes it’s loud, but it’s a vaccuum cleaner, they are loud. It’s easy to use, including the attachments, and easy to clean. And the clear canister is great, because you can actually see all the crap it picks up. It’s just satisfying, and maybe a little disturbing just how much grit is trapped in your carpet without you realizing it. I have three friends with Dysons, and they love theirs too. We’ve actually talked about the satisfaction of using it and seeing what it picks up. Maybe we need more discussion topics, but there you go.

I love you even though you are a BoSox fan. I suppose I can forgive you.

I don’t get all het up over appliances, generally, but I love, love, love my Sears Progressive canister vac. There are all different permutations of them with different features, but I love the telescoping wand, the little light that tells you when you have sucked up enough dirt, and especially the little powered hand tool for stairs, upholstery, etc.

They also come in pretty colors (mine is red) and are all less than $400, I believe. My only gripe is the somewhat cheesy tool door cover, which seems unnecessarily flimsy.

DO NOT BUY THE DIRT DEVIL. IT WILL SEND YOU TO THE CHIROPRACTOR BECAUSE IT IS SO UNGAINLY.

Thanks for asking. I love to rave about my vacuum.

We are on parallel paths, it seems. My work hell ended yesterday (no more 14-hour days!!) and I am heading to NYC to prance around with my best friends for a few days.

So, as I know I am really looking forward to this time off from work and being surrounded by people I love and doing things I enjoy (eating yummy food! being a pedestrian!) – I am sending my best wishes for a fantastic couple of weekends!!

Personally, I daydream twice daily about owning a Dyson or Miele vaccum. Because I have such a high-paced, cutting edge life out here in the big, square, Red Western State. HELP ME.

I’ve also heard the Dyson is overrated, but a coworker of mine just bought one and is both delighted and disgusted by how well it works. But anything by Miele is fantastic.

    HAVE FUN!

  • 8. Angella  |  September 12th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

We bought a vacuum a few months ago! It’s a Dyson! And apparently? It’s phenomenal.

I have only used it, um, ONCE. My hubby is the floor guy.

But he uses it and obsesses over it and might even prefer it to ME some days.

Which says a lot about the amazing-ness of said Dyson.

My in-laws bought us a Kenmore Progressive vacuum last year when our old craptacular Hoover died, and IT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! It’s light! It’s quiet! Sucks up everything, even wispy dog hair! Balances on stairs! Hepa filters! It’s like a member of the family (but in a good way). Seriously, it’s the only cleaning device I’ve ever owned that evokes genuine feelings of pleasure in my generally apathethic-towards-housework soul.

Have a kickass time in PA. I’m sure nothing horrifyingly embarassing will happen to you.

(Pssst… were you aware The Brother Kite has a first album, too? It’s on iTunes.)

  • 11. Sadie  |  September 13th, 2007 at 5:39 am

heh, just last weekend (or maybe the weekend before?) I bought a Dyson at Target, because they had the DC07 in a pink breast cancer edition ($40 of the purchase goes to research), and also because they were offering a $100 gift card with any Dyson purchase. So I got a (pink!!) Dyson aftyer years of subpar, cheap, frequently broken vacuums. I vacuum at least twice a week because of the dog and the hardwoods, and I decided it was time to invest in a worthy ally. So far, I really like the Dyson, except for $400 you would think they’d give you a retractable cord…but no, I have to wind the cord up after every use. But it’s powerful and maneuverable, and did I mention pink? And like someone before me, it makes me realize how fucking dirty my floors were, which is both satisfying and not.

  • 12. claire  |  September 13th, 2007 at 5:45 am

i have a Dyson. The boyfriend and i anticipated fighting over ‘who gets to vacuum this time’ type-scenarios. It never happened. I am not in love with the $450 vacuum. It’s nice and all, but not as perfect as i had hoped.
And don’t bother with the purple “Animal” version – it means nothing.

Is there something in Newark other than airport? Huh…

  • 13. Caquincy  |  September 13th, 2007 at 6:11 am

I was having the same problem with vacuums. They only lasted a year–IF THAT. We finally threw up our hands and bought the Dyson. We’ve had it for 2 1/2 years so far with NO PROBLEMS. I love it and don’t feel it was over-rated one bit.

And now according to the gods of Murphy, thy vacuum will now self-destruct. And then I can only blame YOU for inducing me to comment on your blog! Evil foul temptress!

  • 14. Red  |  September 13th, 2007 at 6:29 am

I love my Miele Solaris. I live in a house built in 1830 with a dirt basement and horse-hair plaster walls, so it is incredibly dusty. After borrowing a Dyson from a friend to test out on our hardwood, tile, and rugs I was disappointed. It was heavy, very loud, and was hard to maneuver, especially when trying to get under the bed or other furniture. I also noticed that it couldn’t quite get dirt or cat/dog hair and guinea pig debris (hay, wood shavings) that were around the edges of the room (where the floor meets the wall). I requested The Miele as a 5th anniversary present; that’s how in love I am with this vacuum. It has been three years and I still love it as much as I did the day I got it. The canister style is convenient and moves easily, sucks up everything you want it to, it is QUIET, it has a retractable cord, and considering I let it fall down the stairs onto ceramic tile and it suffered not at all, I am pretty sure it is indestructible. I also love HEPA filter, the fact that the cloth-style bags never rip and always close up tight (easy to put in and remove), the fact that I can vacuum the curtains and cobwebs on the ceiling easily, and the great warranty. OK, I’ll stop, but seriously…this vacuum rocks!

  • 15. Swistle  |  September 13th, 2007 at 6:41 am

Oh, YAY! I JUST posted about how much I hate vacuuming, and then afterward thought I should have asked for suggestions for better vacuums–so I will be haunting this comment section for awhile.

One of my friends used her tax refund to buy a Dyson, thinking FINALLY she would be happy with her vacuum. She was so unhappy she returned it, thinking it was defective–and the replacement was just as bad, so she returned that, too. She said it was the death of a dream.

  • 16. Jamie  |  September 13th, 2007 at 6:46 am

    I. Love. My. Dyson. Animal.

Black dog, white carpet, you figure it out. My dyson keeps me from (a) going crazy, and (b) having grey carpeting. Also, I hate hate HATE vacuums with bags, and I cannot stand vacuums with headlights. Who vacuums in the dark? And it’s purple, which makes me happy.

  • 17. One Smart Cookie  |  September 13th, 2007 at 6:55 am

Am jealous that you have tickets to a Red Sox game. I haven’t been to one all season because I am unwilling to pay hundreds of gazillions of dollars. Enjoy and GO SOX!

P.S. Why no love for Wake? I have to say he is my favorite player, even when his pitching is, uh, less than stellar like it has been his last two starts.

P.P.S. Now I sound like some kind of crazy sports fan, when really I spend most night begging Matt to TURN OFF THE DAMN GAME ALREADY.

  • 18. Askew Adventures  |  September 13th, 2007 at 6:59 am

I got a Dyson as an apartment warming present from my mom and grandmother and I wish I had had the heart to return it, because I really don’t think it was worth all that money. I am very much not impressed by it. I think the suction power is completely pathetic. I have no suggestions to offer you for a good vacuum, since I’ve never owned or used one, but I thought I’d throw in my two cents about the Dyson.

  • 19. Lawyerish  |  September 13th, 2007 at 7:31 am

I am sure we’ve discussed this before, but I will leap at the chance to rave about our Dyson Animal. Like Angella, the hubs is the vaccuum guy — at least he has been since we got the Animal. He LOVES to use that thing. It is, as others have said, horrifying yet so, so pleasurable to see how much SICK stuff that thing picks up.

We bought a factory refurbished model off Amazon, so it was reasonably priced and as yet has not imploded or anything. We did come home once to find that the cleaning lady had done something to it that made it all wonky, but I called customer service and they told me exactly what to do and it was all better — spit-spot!

Also, the special carpet cleaner stuff they give you with the vaccuum is quite excellent. It makes your carpets all new-looking.

  • 20. celebrate woo-woo  |  September 13th, 2007 at 7:56 am

I bought a new vacuum about 18 months ago. I was ready to spend money on a Dyson, but what I found was that the reviews of Dysons weren’t so superb. Sure, some people rave, but there were just as many unimpressed and even displeased users to make me search elsewhere. I finally settled on a Eureka. It has wonderful suction. My husband took a Dyson for a spin while visiting his parents’ last month because his mom was a Dyson fan. He was not impressed; though our Eureka vacuum was significantly superior. Turns out his mom has always had bag vacuums of less-than-stellar quality, which explains why the Dyson was a dream vacuum for her.

Based on my searching the eureka website, I’d say mine is most similar to the Boss 4D, although those seem to have a couple more attachments than mine.

  • 21. Beth  |  September 13th, 2007 at 8:14 am

I bought this vacuum at the recommendation of Consumer Reports three years ago: http://factorykitchenstore.com/product/10802561/B00009R66C/Hoover_U6439_900_Self_Propelled_WindTunn/

I still love it. The suction is amazing, getting all cat and dog hair without the use of duct tape (my previous solution). I’ve heard good things about the Dyson, but I’m an old-fashioned bag kind of girl who is easily wooed by promises of HEPA filters and new-fangled hose attachments. (That sounds dirty somehow.)

  • 22. Jess  |  September 13th, 2007 at 10:45 am

Torsten did extensive research before selecting our vacuum cleaner, which is the Hoover S3765-040 WindTunnel Electronic Bagless Canister Vacuum (I copied that straight from our Amazon order history). I’ve never used it, but only because Torsten loves it so much that he always wants to vacuum, and who am I to argue with that? But he thinks it’s great, and it does a good job on both the rug and the hardwood.

Also, please take pictures at the Red Sox game. I’m so jealous!

  • 23. Emily  |  September 13th, 2007 at 10:45 am

Love our Dyson too but what I really want to say is I could kill a whole week in a hotel bathtub if it faced a television. My ultimate nirvana.

  • 24. Emily  |  September 13th, 2007 at 10:47 am

Oh, I should add that we saved some cash on the Dyson by buying a refurbished one on Overstock.

  • 25. Jeanne  |  September 13th, 2007 at 11:22 am

We have a Hoover Windtunnel bagless upright. The husband does most of the vacuuming and has been very pleased. To quote him, “This vacuum really sucks, but in a good way!” We chose it because it had been a Consumer Reports best buy a few years ago. The sales person we talked with said that bagless is the way to go because the models with bags lose suction as the bag fills. I don’t think he was handing us a line about that either ,since they sold both versions in the store.

Several friends have Dysons and swear by them too.

  • 26. Andrea  |  September 13th, 2007 at 11:26 am

I have a Dyson and I have to say, I’m not that impressed. There is a filtration system despite what the dude on TV says, though the filter has to be rinsed every six months and given time to dry instead of just buying a new one. It only took a time or two before our cat found the filter drying on the counter and absconded with it.

I must say, though, that we have abused our Dyson. My husband finished our basement with drywall and plaster and our vacuum has sucked up so much drywall dust and is still going. It’s suction isn’t what it once was, and I’m not sure how much the missing filter piece has to do with that or if it’s the sheer amount of vacuuming we did in a one month period. I am convinced that any other vacuum would have given out before now, and this one is still working, albeit not quite as well as it once did. In fact, we did ruin a shop vac vacuum in the Great Basement Finishing Project of 2007. Motor burned up.

Also, our Dyson is still sucking up the cat hair, though it takes a few more passes than it did. I really don’t think the regular Dyson does well on hardwood, laminate, or tile floors because sometimes I can feel little flecks of stuff hitting my feet as I go, as if it’s just blowing the chip crumbs around instead of picking them up. But that’s why I use a swiffer in the kitchen instead of a vacuum.

Overall, it’s a decent vacuum. Would I buy it again? No. But I’m not sorry for having bought it the first time.

  • 27. rosarita  |  September 13th, 2007 at 12:36 pm

My Oreck upright is still going strong at eight years of age, but I will not replace it when it , inevitably , dies, despite the fact that my southeast Texan husband likes the accompanying handvac to the Oreck, better known as The Bowling Ball Sucker. No, I have seriously considered going back to a canister vac, like an Electrolux. I may change my mind, too.

  • 28. Suebob  |  September 13th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

And hey, don’t be tempted by the bagless thing. It is so disgusting to have to dump this big horrifying blob of everything you have sucked up. Buy bags, change often, end of story.

  • 29. Dana  |  September 13th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

I love that you dislike Sarah Silverman. Ugh, overrated.

I also love my Dyson. We previously owned a Kirby. If Chuck Norris were a vacuum cleaner, he’d be a Dyson.

    An allergy and asthma-friendly Dyson.

  • 30. Mauigirl52  |  September 13th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Who knew so many people have Dysons? I hadn’t heard of them before (apparently I lived under a rock) until today a woman I work with told me she’s leaving our company to go work for Dyson! Now suddenly this entire list of comments is about Dysons. Strange coincidence!

  • 31. H  |  September 13th, 2007 at 7:16 pm

We’re dorks, I know, but we live by Consumer Reports and the Kenmore/Sears vacuums, especially the canister, are highly rated. I think they may even be rated a Consumer Reports Best Buy, which scores big points at our house. We’re getting one as soon as our Rikka bites the dust. Pun intended. Heh.

  • 32. K  |  September 13th, 2007 at 8:10 pm

I only saw one mention of it, but we’ve always had Electrolux in our family. I CANNOT handle cheap vacuums because I’ve been spoiled by Electrolux. The one we had when I was young used to be my grandmother’s, meaning it was probably 18 years old at least! They are expensive, but worth it – I think. :)

  • 33. bellydancer  |  September 14th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

Vacuums– I have the oldest late 1950′s bullet shaped Royal cannister vacuum. Honestly, I went through several Dirt Devils and the like, and the last time I took one to be repaired, they recommended that I just toss it because I could buy a new one for less. That just didn’t “sit well” with me and I asked, well, what about a vacuum that won’t just fall apart and I can get parts for it and get it fixed, and he pointed to this 1950′s space machine, Judy Jetson styled vacuum. I think I paid about $50-75 for it at the vacuum repair place and I’ve had it through numerous hardwood floored apartments and now through 10 years of house. And I have a pug, a peke, and a persian cat– and you know the little delights they can leave for you to find. Now you won’t lift any bowling balls with this vacuum– but it works fine on hardwoods, and with the carpet attachment on carpet, keeps my white upholstery nice, and you can use a paper towel or a paper bag for the bag inside. They just don’t make ‘em to last anymore. Get an oldie.

Our vac is a Simplicity and it cannot be rivaled. We spend $700 on it, but this thing is so clean that you can write it off as a medical expense on your taxes – seriously. It doesn’t get any better than that. I’ve had some vacs, but this one is the BIG MOMMA!!! You can’t get it at a regular retailer, you’ll have to go to the vac store. And a note – the Electrolux (also great) that you buy at like Best Buy IS NOT the same that you buy at the vac store. Electrolux sold part of themselves to Eureka. Do not be swayed in the muckiness of vac shopping! GOOD LUCK!

  • 35. clickmom  |  September 14th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

I totally heart my Dyson so much that I got two. One for my real home and one for my summer shack in utopia. The first thing every time I burst through the door is pet it fondly and give it a treat. Okay, maybe that’s what I do to the dog, but if I had to choose between the dyson and the dog… well…..

Welcome to Jersey. It’s supposed to rain Saturday AM and then the rest of the weekend is clear. Also, I saw no less than 5 praying mantis today so keep your eyes peeled.

Yeah, in Jersey I get my thrills however I can.

  • 36. Carla Hinkle  |  September 15th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

I used to have a pricey vacuum ($300, not ridiculous, but still). But since I only changed/cleaned the filter oh, about once a year, it didn’t last very long. Also, I am short on closet space and could never find a good place for it.

So for Christmas I got the Hoover Fold-Away, with a fold down handle, so I can stick it in a small closet — and if I (shocker) clean/change the filter about twice a month, it still picks up a spectacular amount of dirt, even though it cost about $75.

For the wood floors I use an electric broom. I am hot for the Shark Euro Pro which cost me all of about $30. Again, change/clean the filter often.

Personally I think it is better to have 1 thing for hard floors, one for carpet. The surfaces are so different I think you get a better clean that way. The Shark sucks up dust/dirt in an amazing way and is sooo much quicker than sweeping.

Only thing for an electric broom — I hear that you should get one with a cord, as the cordless ones lose battery charge way too fast.

I have tried! to like Sarah Silverman so many times that I’m finally content with disliking her immensely. Her show makes no sense at all, and when I watch it I don’t laugh, I just stare quizzically.

  • 38. Vacuum Sensei  |  September 24th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

I think I’m a little late to the party. And take my recomendation with a grain of “Sarah Silverman is FUNNY!”

I always have liked Dyson. It’s expensve but they’re exteremely reliable and if they do break down, fairly easy to fix. I can single out the Dyson Animal as my favorite model, the only thing I didn’t like was the suction hose was built into the handle. Other than that, a very solid vacuum cleaner.

    Sincerely,
    The Vacuum Sensei
