Good Intentions Rust
September 24th, 2007
In an uncharacteristic turn of events, I, like many others, am obsessed with the Flickr Working Closet pool, and will very likely be contributing, because if there’s one thing that leaps out at me, it’s that people look SNAZZY when they go to work, and where are the Reefs? The sneakers? The horridly ill-fitting pants that I seem to sport every day?
Seriously, y’all, if nothing else, it’s made me realize that my own wardrobe is rife with Glamour Don’ts, and while it’s not the most important thing to me, it’s gotten so bad that I am actually embarrassed to put myself together, lest people notice and make it a THING, because they always make it a thing. Take today, for example: I was out of clean clothes, and was forced to throw on a pair of slightly dressy trousers with zippy little patent leather heels, and you’d think the universe had been suddenly set to melt down, the way my co-workers reacted in my morning meeting. My boss actually yelped, “HER SHOES OH MY GOD! LOOK AT HER SHOES.”
I take that as a sign that really, I need to step it up a bit, because if a pair of heels sends people’s heads spinning, like it’s some sort of wild special occasion that maybe involves an interview for another job (seriously, I think they were panicked) or at the very least some sort of cookie-and-balloon-laden occasion that also involves bacon, then maybe I’ve got some wardrobe issues I need to address.
Speaking of Glamour Don’ts, have you seen this? It’s just … well, it’s like Hot or Not, but with an added dose of cruel, cruel terror, and now I can add this to my list of things to be afraid of: one day discovering that those are my eyes behind those nefarious, nefarious bars, and my be-Reefed feet held up for the mockery of millions of people who know how to pull off a wedge heel, or at least pretend that they do.
Onward! It’s premier week, and I’m overwhelmed with television, as I was last year. It’s become a chore, rather than a relaxing activity, and instead of being excited about Heroes, I viewed it as time away from cleaning the cat litter box. Aaand, I think perhaps we’ve just illustrated the second problem that needs to be solved, like perhaps there’s a life I can pick up at Target this weekend. I think I said the exact thing last season, and ooh, update: Heroes! Loved. I don’t care how much Matthew Gilbert warned me not to get too attached, as there is danger ahead, in the form of far too many characters. I am a sheep. Love.
And with premier week comes the painful decision regarding Grey’s Anatomy: dump it? Give it another chance? We’ve been promised pseudo-redemption by Shonda Rhimes, but really, I don’t know if I can endure another season of Mer-Der drama, and the whole show just makes me feel stupid. And yet I find it oddly compelling, not unlike a ripe blackhead that begs to be squeezed. I know I shouldn’t, because it’ll leave a hole, but I can’t help it.
With that appetizing image, I’ll leave you with a product recommendation for your trouble: While Clinique products generally have a bad rap, their brush-on cream eyeliner is fantastic. It goes on smoothly, blends easily, and Black Honey is one of the best, most wearable browns I’ve ever used. Personally, I’m a fan of applying it with the MAC angled eyeliner brush.
I may not be able to dress for shit, but my eyes are lined beautifully.
Happy Tuesday!
*The Cake Sale. So, after months of coveting the album from afar, because I can’t get enough of Lisa Hannigan, I finally sucked it up and ordered the import last week — for $40 — and it arrived today. Imagine my excitement when I learned that it’s being released in the U.S. in two weeks for, I’m guessing, a lot less. But how pretty is this song? In two weeks, you, too, can own it for a lot less than I paid for it. Enjoy!

At the beginning of the summer I was digging in the back of my closet and found a cute little black skirt that I hadn’t worn in ages. Since it looked cuter with heels than with my standard flip flops, I slid into some heels and went to work feeling much snazzier than usual, but still relatively casual. When I got to work, my favorite coworker in the whole world (note the sarcasm) said “Wow, you look like you actually put some EFFORT into how you look today!” Nothing like a backhanded compliment to start your day off right.

Clinique gets a bad rap?? Hmm, I always thought everyone liked it. It’s too full of mineral oil for me, it gives me hives.
I like heels and all, but sometimes I have to carry heavy junk around. Heavy junk that’s just arrived from China in a broke-ass box. Someone show me some chic shoes that won’t cause me to fall down the stairs, then we’ll talk!

Oh, I LOVE the Black Honey eyeliner! I got it a few weeks ago, and it is fantastic. I used to wear the Black Honey Almost Lipstick, and that was also great.
Also, the Glamour Don’tspotting? IS LIKE CRACK TO ME.

I have been submitting to the Working Closet too. But am SO BEHIND in any kind of fashion knowledge. Sigh.

Oh you so shouldn’t send me to a link like Glamour Don’tspotting in the middle of one of your posts…I am highly distractable and very nearly didn’t return due to the fun I was having looking at worse fashion disasters than myself. Seriously, the dude in white spandex with some sort of flowered or patterned underwear underneath? Awesome.

Oooooh- Lisa Hannigan. Are you a Damien Rice fan, too? I love him. And I love her with him. And while I’m on the subject of Irish musicians, I saw the movie Once this weekend. I loved it, too!

I joined the Flickr pool for the sole purpose of motivating myself to dress in something respectable every day. Which, if you look at my photos, might alarm you. Because it will cause you to imagine what I would have been wearing had I not been posting my photos to the internet. It has done its job, though; I have worn real shoes every day this month! Not just soccer slides! Somebody give me a medal.

Wow — you weren’t kidding. She does have a great voice.

i don’t think i own pants that are not ‘ill-fitting’ so there’s really no sense in me posting pictures of whatever craptacular outfit i threw on this morning. Not that i could even compose myself for long enough to be able to take a picture before i run out the door with my shoes under my arm and a granola bar in my mouth. No, i’m not put-together enough for that…
And i am now seriously scared that i am somewhere in this Don’tspotting thing. Holy crap is this frightening. There are PEOPLE taking PICTURES of MEEEE.. Well, probably not, but there’s always that chance.

I always worry that I am not fashionable enough, and I am wasting valuable youth where I should be taking bold risks! wearing cute things while I can! et cetera – and so when I read about this Flickr pool I was sort of scared to look at it, for fear my insecurities would be confirmed: everyone in the world is better-dressed than me! And yet, when I perused the pool, I felt better instantly. That is not a knock to the women in the pool, by any means – it is merely an observation that more than half of the women pictured do not have the sort of job I have. Meaning, they can wear flip-flops and capri pants to work. Whereas I have not worn anything other than heels to work, um, ever, and my handbag always matches my shoes. So even though I feel like a schlub, I guess to other people I probably look better than I think. But, I am still pretty jealous when you mention going to work in Reefs.

The Flickr pool is addicting. Initially I felt like a redonkulous goofball cheesing it up for the camera every morning, but you get over it. It’s fun to see what other real women are wearing to work everyday. And you don’t want to look TOO scummy when you know your picture is going to be taken.

I know I’m not fashionable enough. But my clothes budget is non-existent, and especially 7 months pregnant, everything is ill fitting. I know, this too shall pass, but seriously, I wish I had a little more money to my name to be able to afford the semblance of a decent wardrobe.
Grey’s. I am still sucked in. I have to find out what happens with the George-Callie-Izzy triangle. I have to see how the Chief’s wife is going to take him not retiring, especially after she just changed her mind about him in the season finale after her miscarriage. I want to know what happens with the Nazi not getting the Chief Resident position. I am mildly curious about the Mer-Der-Lexie thing now, but could take it or leave it. Three seasons of drama over that relationship is about enough. Break up or stay together already. Who cares? But there’s enough other stuff going on that I wanna know about.
Speaking of other stuff, are you planning on watching the spin-off Private Practice on Wednesdays? Just curious.

I have always enjoyed Glamour Don’ts. But now they are letting people go around submitting photos of others? YIKES! With Hot or Not, at least the person involved is ASKING. In this case, it’s open season.
It sounds like your level of fashion is just perfect: when you do it up, you get big effects. I wouldn’t want to do that daily and have everyone get used to it, so that dressing DOWN a little got the big effects, or so that I had to wear, like, a cocktail dress to work before anyone would notice I was dressy.

Yes but with the sad fate of many Heroes characters comes the arrival of VERONICA MARS! And I’m so excited!
(Also, Milo, your hair is looking fabulous. And by fabulous I mean, you officially just took the #1 spot on my freebie list. Don’t tell Jennifer Aniston. I’ll break the news to her my way.)
Give Grey’s another chance. Let’s just hope Meredith has worked on her monologue breathing techinques during the hiatus.

Oh yes, this week begins the Fall TV Auditions at our house. It’s like American Idol. The first week is like the stadium cattle call where we DVR any show we might be REMOTELY interested in. And then one of us plays the “behind the scenes judge” and screen the pilot episodes. And only the top 3 or 4 new shows get to see Randy, Paula, and Simon, with maybe 1 or 2 going through to Hollywood after the first few weeks.
16. Suebob | September 25th, 2007 at 9:35 am
I am kind of torn about not having a TV. On one hand, whenever I see it – at hotels or my parents’ house, usually – I am appalled at the utter stoooopidity of it, especially what passes for news these days.
But the other part of me feels like I am becoming increasingly unmoored from our shared culture, and even if that culture is as silly as ANTM, being left out is sometimes uncomfortable.
I dunno. I don’t think I could bring myself to go out and spring for cable AND a TV set. I would feel like I was doing something illicit.

For some togetherness in your Glamour Don’tness, see my Working Closet contributions, aka the Gallery of Ill-Fitting Pants. And someone actually told me that I shouldn’t ever (EVER) wear tennis shoes with jeans unless I’m working in the garden or am a child. Seriously!
18. Heather B. | September 25th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
The Working Closet is pool is crack. Now I actually take time to plan what I’m going to wear to work and I also shave. Which means avoiding situations like having to wear wool pants when it’s 80 degrees because they’re the only clean pants that don’t cut of the blood flow to my mid-section. Bonus!
19. Leane | September 25th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
I like to dress up for work at times.. but wish I could wear my Rocket Dog shoes every day.
Grey’s–i’m ready for it to start but the ending of last season was so blah..and depressing..that something GOOD AND HAPPY BETTER HAPPEN.
20. jonniker | September 25th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Sadie: Yes, I am assuming, of course, that everyone has a job like me, where you can pretty much slap on whatever you feel like it, provided you’re fully clothed. No one cares what writers wear. No one.
Susan: I can take Damien or leave him, but Lisa’s voice is just incredible. I can’t get enough, and she’s entirely why I’ve bought Damien’s music.
Andrea: I did set the TiVo for Private Practice, because I love Kate Walsh. HOWEVER, I do not have high hopes. Like, at all.

oh yeah
the whole ‘everything else is in the wash’ syndrome
believe me, it freaks people out even more when the people you hang out with are other slouchy mommies
i’m sure they thought i was sloping off to a hotel for an illicit liaison whilst my kids were at preschool and i was like: ‘nooooooooooo! my jeans are in the wash!’
22. Cassidy | September 27th, 2007 at 7:20 am
At the end of last season, I was SO over Grey’s Anatomy. But, now that all the previews are coming back on, I find myself being drawn to it. I just don’t want to watch it though.
I also am going to watch Private Practice but I have a very good feeling that it will be dumb, dumb, dumb.
Can’t wait for the Office tonight!

I just had the same A-HA moment about my wardrobe as you did about yours. Even about it a couple days after you.*
I’m going to have to look into this Flickr Working Closet pool you speak of. Could be another aid!
* I swear I didn’t read yours first and copy you because I just discovered your blog today. Was routing around other blogs I read and somehow landed on yours. It’s nice to be here!
