Again Today

January 13th, 2008

In the grand scheme of stupid things, perhaps the most idiotic was the fact that it didn’t occur to me until Saturday that I could have just gone to the gym to shower on Thursday. The gym, by the way, is a three-minute walk from my house and if forced, I could have done it in my bathrobe.

We’ve been sans-Internet for much of the weekend, which is a bit freeing, really, but doesn’t lend itself to non-stop refreshing to see if anyone responded to our advertisements to rent our house out. On the other hand, I don’t think it’s particularly healthy to do nothing other than hitting REFRESHREFRESHREFRESHOMGREFRESH for days and days on end.

(OMG REFRESH)

I had to work this weekend, and so did Adam, so we did little else other than work and wait desperately for the Internet to come back on. I may be paying $24.95 a month as long as I have Embarq, but even that is too high a price for three minutes of Internets a day. However, in those few free moments I DID have, I made pickled carrots, and I have to tell you, you haven’t lived until you’ve had these delicious, delicious pickled carrots from Smitten Kitchen. And – AND! – I say that before they’ve even fully cured, as I’ve only had them in the fridge for a couple hours, yet I’ve already eaten almost a full half-pound. Go forth and brine, for they are wonderful. I fully understand SmittenDeb’s desire to hoard all of the vegetables from Alex’s roving eye, because I actually wondered if I could pickle the bag of clementines in the crisper drawer. I’m still thinking about it.

Do you ever stop and think about what your eating habits would be if you were single? I mean, assuming you’re otherwise spoken for, of course. Personally, I know — and this is sad — that I would be a lot skinnier, for I would eat little else other than fruit and brined vegetables. Truth be told, my eating habits are outstanding, at least when left to my own devices, though it’s safe to say that I would be perpetually bloated and puffy-eyed from too much salt. Anyway, it’s not that Adam is keeping me down or anything, but his insistence on three square meals and a pantry full of things that don’t come packed in vinegar does keep my waistline a little beyond waif-like proportions.

Anyway, we’re at the point in our show where I realize that I’ve done exactly nothing of note other than work and brine this weekend, and it’s … well, that’s even sadder than vacuuming. I also sort of feel like I should throw this up there before Embarq decides to take away the Internet again.

Hey, and in addition, I spent an inordinate amount of time contemplating the fact that Lindsay Lohan *constantly* wears the wrong shade of lipstick. Is no one talking to her about this? Why does she insist on nudes, when they do nothing but wash her out?

So tell me, did you do something better? Eat anything brined? (MMMM … PICKLES)

Happy Monday!

*Brandi Carlile

Nothing brined, no, but an egg sandwich and some cereal. Boring, right?

Also, I’ve thought that about Lindsay’s lip color decisions for years and years. As well as a few other things, but that is definitely one of them.

One of my favorite recipes (a dessert of course) is from Smitten Kitchen. I get so giddy when my Google Reader announces she has something new for me to try.

We watched Olivia smile ALL weekend. She’s been doing it off and on randomly since week 2, but now at week 5 there’s more of a reason for her smiles it seems.
Oh, that and we changed a bunch of diapers. And I bought a nursing cover – it’s a cape of sorts, nay, an apron really, that covers up the boobs and the baby during nursing. Because I was “that lady” at the mall the other day nursing her kid. She was screaming, what was I supposed to do???
Good call re: LiLo…HORRIBLE taste in lip shades. Her stylist must not be paying attention.

My culinary experience this weekend was making hummus. I made roasted red pepper hummus, jalapeno hummus and black bean/chick pea hummus while enjoying some of my neighbor’s homemade cherry wine. Then, I convinced my husband and daughter to try various hummus and pita bread combinations.

And…I shoveled snow, cleaned the house and watched some very good old movies on TCM. I also watched The Amazing Race and the Golden Globes, er, show, or whatever it was.

I had a couple of beers tonight and that was the best thing that went into my mouth all the weekend long.

I watched the worst movie ever- I can’t even remember the name (must be a protective mechanism) but it starred Ben Stiller and he got married to a woman who turned out to be quite freaky. It wasn’t funny at all.

I TOTALLY got the Brandi Carlile reference even before you said it! She rocks; in fact, we listened to her to and from the mountain for sledding this morning. You know it’s good stuff when a 2 year old and a 4 year old like it.

Are you kidding? I spent the day at NASFT Fancy Food Show -

    10 year old balsamic vinegar
    balsamic vinegar with pear
    …with strawberry
    ….made into a glaze
Dry Soda (OMG the food trend of the future, I swear)
Wensleydale cheese with mango and papaya
    ….with Cranberries
Creamy Pecorino Romano – made me SHOUT “Rock and roll!” much to the amusement of the Italians manning the booth
Mozarella wrapped in hoja santa leaves
    Black truffle pate
Serrano Ham (yes, I broke the vegetarianism for a cute Spanish guy with a very sharp knife and some paper-thin ham)

    Is that enough?? Still digesting.

Normally I am not a fan of pickled…well, ANYTHING. Yet these pickled carrots sound intriguing to me, as I am a fan of the carrot/dill combination. Perhaps I will dip a toe into the pickling waters you’ve been extolling.

I live alone and definitely eat much better on the nights I am not dining with my boyfriend…a tuna sandwich on wheat and some baby carrot s does not constitute a meal for him as it might for me, and he’s always sniffing and rummaging for dessert. Oh, and a meal without some type of roll or bread accompanying it is a bitter disappointment to him.

I still remember what my eating habits were like when I was single, and they weren’t that great. Still, they were better than how I ate when Torsten and I first started dating. My eating habits definitely went downhill for the first nine or so months that we were together. And then I started Weight Watchers, which I wouldn’t have done if I were single, so now I can definitely say that my eating habits are better now because I live with someone else so it seems worth it to cook real meals instead of eating crap. But it was not easy to get to this healthy place.

    The lipstick—I KNOW! WTH?

Also: how many hits are you going to get for “Lindsay Lohan nude” now?

I would probably be much thinner if i were living alone, scavenging for food for just myself. The boyfriend has this thing about dessert that i never had before, and really, i don’t NEED dessert EVERY night. Not even every other night (once a week would be fine). He doesn’t really understand that.
So, yeah. I’d probably live on tuna sandwiches, fruit and Lean Cuisines if I were the only one i had to feed. Ah well.
Also – i just learned about Smitten Kitchen last week and i spent close to two days straight on there just reading the recipes, ogling the pictures and drooling a little. She’s pretty great.

This is so weird, because last night J. was eating a pickle, which for some reason made me think of you and your pickled vegetables and how when Adam is out of town you eat unusual combinations like mashed potatoes and pickled vegetables. So that made me think of the things I used to eat when I was single (mostly cereal). I think I eat far more nutritious and balanced food with him, but I definitely eat more amounts of food than I would if I were left to my own devices.

My grocery shopping is so different now that I am married/live with H, which means that I have totally different eating habits. It is strange. Pickled carrots sound like they might be fantastic. I will go check out that recipe!

My theory about Lohan is this – she’s a natural redhead, it suited her quite well and now that she’s chosen an unGODly awful shade of platinum blonde, she no longer makes the right cosmetic choices.

that being said, she also wears the same pair of leggings every single day (at least according to the paparazzi photos). which means she’ll be looking really washed out in line at the pharmacy for her UTI medication.

When I lived alone I ate a lot of popcorn and white wine. Now I eat other foods too, with the white wine. At least with kids we try to offer more balanced meals than we would if we were still eating on the living room floor, watching Ken Jennings on Jeopardy. Last night we had beef stroganoff and I thought, huh, I really should have a veggie or something with this. But, you know, at least I wasn’t feeding them popcorn and white wine.

i’m mostly a lurker – but i wanted to add my 2 cents (perhaps unneeded) but we are in central florida and had good luck renting out our condo using craigslist. i obviously don’t know what mechanisms you have used so far – but that worked both times we rented out. though there was a clear price point for it – having raised and dropped it – we found we got a lot of interest when it was priced “properly”. hope that helps!

Mmm pickled things… I would never have the motivation to pickle stuff, despite how wonderful it all sounds. Sad.

I *am* single and living utterly alone, and I do all right eating… a lot of oatmeal, a lot of frozen stuff. I actually split a head of lettuce with my aunt once because I was like “a whole head of lettuce? it’ll go bad! I never buy lettuce anymore” and she took pity on me, haha. We bought it in the store and dissected it in the car, no joke. I worry for when my eating habits are impacted by someone else’s, it can only go downhill.

If I had more money I’d probably eat out more though, or at least order in, and that wouldn’t be good. When I lived with a roomie, I did *drink* more, that’s for damn sure.

lindsay’s lips annoy the crap out of me too ;)

  • 19. metalia  |  January 15th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Um…I don’t know how to tell you this, but I have the same thoughts about Lindsay Lohan’s lipstick choices. (I’m not crazy about her other go-to shade, Truck Stop Whore Red. There are shades in between, Lindsay! SHADES IN BETWEEEEEN!) Make of that what you will. When not thinking about that, the shallow portion of my brain is occupied with wondering whether or not I should say something to the lady on my morning train with the heavy mustache. (Thoughts?)

Hey, Been reading for a long time, not sure I have ever commented before. I did little vacuuming at all this weekend. But I did a lot of eating. TOO MUCH eating and must now try to salad my way though the week.. Great blog..
    K
Oh and I am with you on the lipstick.. LiLo needs to be told..

My big accomplishment of the weekend was that I took down the Christmas tree (yes, it was a real tree, but we didn’t put it up till Dec. 23 so it wasn’t THAT dried out).

I too would be thin if I weren’t married for the same reasons you state. My husband insists on a real dinner. I could go with a salad with tuna on it but not him!
