American Pie
September 1st, 2008
Well, I’m sunburned. How about you? We spent the weekend at the lake, basically, for what could potentially be the last time this season, and though I’m mildly saddened by that, oh my hell, I am so ready for fall. I spent the last three years in eternal summer, and for the love of God, I’m ready to experience a season that involves long sleeves and maybe something other than ballet flats and flip flops. Yes, I KNOW I will regret this discussion come winter, but I don’t care. Like a bad, brief romance with a vapid waiter who’s all style and no substance, I am supremely over summer. This could very well be because my default temperature before pregnancy was generally set to “rather warm” but since becoming pregnant, has been dialed up to “OMFG IS IT HOT IN HERE OR IS IT ME? HUH HUH HUH? ARE YOU HOT? I AM SO HOT! IS THERE ANY AC IN THIS PLACE? JESUS, I AM SO HOT.”
Also? Summer smells. The manure! The Flower Odor of Mystery! MAKE IT STOP.
I’d also like to say that I am sunburned on only half of my face, because of the direction I was facing and also despite the liberal application of sunscreen. This also resulted in some frantic Googling of the “mask of pregnancy” as I desperately wondered if by some hormonal glitch, this half-face sunburn could be a permanent affliction, giving truth to the old wives’ tale that your face really will freeze that way, you stupid dumbass, you should have worn a FULL BODY SHIELD.
Anyway! Our house — as in, the one that we live in, not the one that we own, unfortunately — has been sold, to a family who wants tenants until at least the spring, but that doesn’t really provide any comfort to the pregnant lady who’s all OMFG WE WILL BE HOMELESS. Ergo, I’ll be spending the next several weeks seeking a new home, preferably one that doesn’t have neighbors who enjoy making things like BACON, which is what they had for dinner tonight, and although bacon has been on the white list for some time, the smell can be remarkably disruptive and puke-inducing. Let me also add that there is nothing more annoying than renting at this stage of life, but because we don’t plan on spending the rest of our lives in Vermont, along with that little thing called a mortgage in Florida (I am SO not owning two houses I can’t sell), rent we must do. But that doesn’t mean I don’t hate it, as searching for housing makes me feel like a broke college student and also, I’m a brat who wants to be able to paint her own kid’s goddamn nursery.
However! There are things making me happy, which include, but are not limited to: pie. Oh pie. Where have you been all my life, pie? My mom sent me home with several varieties — not whole pies, mind you, but slices — and I am now obsessed with buying and making pie. Tomorrow, I’m tackling pie crust and Wednesday? I’m making PIE. OH MY GOD PIE. PIE PIE PIE. Apple! Peach! STRAWBERRY. I’m aware that there are — how shall I put this? — PIE DENIERS out there. That is, people who prefer cake and eschew desserts fraught with pie’s fruity goodness, but to those people, I simply say, fine! Eat your chocolate cake and peanut butter cookies! MORE PIE FOR ME, THEN.
See also: apples, which have the remarkable effect of making me feel better almost instantly. Feeling nauseated? Have an apple! Headache? Oh, an apple will fix that! I never liked apples before, but for the last month, they have taken on a mystical quality that is the stuff of pregnancy legend. The Windex of pregnancy, if you will.
Also thrilling is the fact that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams appear to be back together. Like many of the relationships on Swistle’s list (RIP, Michael and Nicolette), I was always a little too emotionally invested in their courtship, and I’ll cop to a squeal of delight after a smoochy pic appeared in this week’s People magazine, of which I am an ardent subscriber.
And finally, though I am not in favor of any personal attacks against Sarah Palin, including those against her daughter (dude, my mother isn’t to blame for my teenage shit and like many, I could have been Bristol, but wasn’t, and not for lack of stupidity), I AM insulted that Representative Michele Bachman (R, Minnesota) sat with Larry King and actually told us that any questions about Palin’s experience — that is, ANY AT ALL, including those that are warranted — is a direct insult to women and implies that her experience as a mother isn’t relevant to the vice presidency.
I … oh dear, I can’t believe we’re playing that card. Lay off her hair, lay off her family, lay off her appearance, yes, PLEASE. But relevant issues — including her record — are fair game, and if you want to be treated as an equal, then stand up and take it without asking for special treatment because you’re a woman. It works both ways, I’m sorry. By standing up for her on the personal issues, we aren’t negating the right to challenge her on the ones that are entirely relevant, and I’m embarrassed that Bachman would be that pandering in a blatant attempt to make anyone who asks QUESTIONS about Palin’s agenda on any level appear misogynistic.
I’m sorry. That was boring. But my God, did I want to punch that woman square in the face until she fell out of her chair and begged for mercy. Does this mean I hate women? No. It means boy howdy do I dislike Michele Bachman. And Palin wouldn’t ever get my vote, but it doesn’t matter, as McCain never had my vote no matter who he picked.
Anyway! To carry on with a topic of discussion that will be explored further in the first Blogstle conference, what say you? Pie: Yummy or Yucky?
Hope you had a great long weekend!
*Do I even have to? Don McLean.

ooooh, next summer you will have a mommy burn! That’s when you put sunscreen on anyone/anything that moves around you but forget your own now blistered nose.
Now I want some pie.
And I’m not even pregnant.

as always there are many subjects on which to comment & enjoy.
i shall put in my two cents & agree with dad’s opinion on pie:
i like only two kinds of pie, hot & cold.
3. Teej | September 1st, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Re: Palin, HERE, HERE. If you question Palin’s record and policies, you are sexist! Because she is a woman. Just hush up and vote for the woman. Ovaries ’08!
It’s as stupid as “I love Hillary so much that instead I am voting for McCain.” What’s the who’s that now?
Pie: All kinds of yummy. Particularly apple pie.
4. -R- | September 1st, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Just so you know, Bachman is a total raving lunatic. I do not say that lightly. I think she is the go-to person for politicians who want to put out a crazy message but also want to be able to deny that they put out that message. Bachman will say anything, if it is crazy enough.
5. Anne L. | September 1st, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Pie=yummy. Cherry with black coffee a la Twin Peaks. And of course, apple with a slice of uber sharp cheddar. And peach. Strawberry-rhubarb. OK, enough. I keep typing and backspacing, because who keeps thinking of yet more and more delicious pies? STOP IT.
6. Lara | September 1st, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Mmmm pie. Pie pie pie. I love pie way way more than cake and I realize Birthday Pie is weird but I usually get my way. I’ve also had Birthday Crumble.
Also – I did an accidental google search just now (finger slipped), I had only typed “lyrics don…” and guess what came up? Don McLean American Pie. AND NOT TWO SECONDS later this post came up in my feed reader. Weird, no?
(Also feed reader just looked wrong, like it should be read feeder? I need to go to bed).
7. Lara | September 1st, 2008 at 8:48 pm
ps, I bet you’re dying to know what I was googling, right?
I was trying to remember who sang “don’t you want me baby” because I am very, very old. (Human League).
8. Jennifer | September 1st, 2008 at 9:04 pm
(1) I would want to paint my own baby’s nursery too. Sorry about your housing woes, perhaps your Florida house will sell eventually … ??
(2) Yes – what you said about Palin and her experience. Actually, more about what you said about her family. I wish people would leave it alone on all the personal mudslinging, dirt-searching national-enquirer-esque items and discuss things relevant.
(3) Pie – yes. All kinds except mincemeat pie (really, what is that stuff – chopped raisins? Ugh!). I just had Apple Pie for dessert tonight. My favorite of all pies is coconut creme, but only once a year (for my birthday) anymore…. TOOOO high on the cholesterol meter!
9. Blythe | September 1st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Apples were the cure-all during my long hot summer of early pregnancy as well. Perhaps we should form a corporation and start marketing them to pregnant ladies. Maybe we could even grow a variety that pooches out on one side like a pregnant belly? It’ll be the next Preggo-Pop!
Lara, next time you want to know anything about that song, including ALL THE LYRICS, don’t bother to google, just email me. They are all living in my brain, taking up valuable space that should be occupied by my safety deposit box PIN number.
(…and even then I knew I’d find a much better place, either with or without you…)
10. Lippy | September 1st, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Yes to the magic of apples as a pregnancy cure all. I ate a ton, but they had to be Fuji. The skin is thinner. Also my husband makes awesome apple pie, and now he needs to make me one. With the crumbly sugar/butter topping which is clearly superior to crust.
Also, remember in the movie Micheal, Andie McDowell sing the pie song? yum
11. Harvest | September 1st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Oh pie glorious pie, I’m squarely in the yummy, best of all the desserts, camp. Especially cherry with a nice flakey crust.
Also, hooray for McGoslin. I’m irrationally thrilled.
12. Lara | September 1st, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Oh Blythe, let’s go. I’ll sing the boy part if you’ll sing the girl part. Ready…?
Actually, I was looking for the name of the band to find their other song I loved. Fascination – I’m watching the video now (hey hey hey HEY).
…while googling pie recipes, when I should be in bed. Damn sleep stealing internet.
13. nic | September 1st, 2008 at 11:01 pm
might be my first comment… but been reading a long time.
pie. oh YES. i get begged every birthday of every friend to make my mother’s famous pie. it’s always finished before it has travelled from the kitchen to the party-room
but leaving Palin’s personal life alone? hell no. her stance on choice/anti-abortion directly affects my personal life, so why should i not be allowed to have my opinion on hers? or her daughter’s, who is the example of why i don’t want to live my life the way Palin wants to force me by law?
she has an opinion on my personal life, i have one on hers. is that unfair?
14. Swistle | September 2nd, 2008 at 3:46 am
Pie with lots of ice cream is OKAY I GUESS.
Totally agree re Sarah Palin. About Nic’s comment above, Palin’s stance on abortion IS a policy/political issue, not a personal issue.
But I’m not going for the daughter thing. My parents, for example, did everything they could to raise me as a good Christian, and I still ended up non-Christian. That’s not a problem with their Christian values or their parenting, that’s a problem with children being separate human beings from their parents and eventually making their own decisions rather than their parents’ decisions—even if their parents do a great job in every way.
15. Swistle | September 2nd, 2008 at 3:48 am
My second paragraph, about the daughter, is still in response to Nic’s comment. When I re-read it, it looked like I was arguing with Jonniker’s point—which of course I’m not.
16. Swistle | September 2nd, 2008 at 3:48 am
Sigh. THIRD paragraph. Is it morning?
17. Amanda | September 2nd, 2008 at 4:45 am
Minnesotan here, and I’ll pull a Dixie Chicks by saying, I’m ashamed Michele Bachmann is from Minn. She’s a dolt. Completely.
Pie? I don’t like all pie, but pumpkin, fresh strawberry and banana cream get my vote.
18. claire | September 2nd, 2008 at 5:22 am
Mmmm…. Pie… I always struggle with making a homemade crust, but the end result is totally worth it… Love apple pie… oh! and Key Lime. Yum.
19. moo | September 2nd, 2008 at 5:51 am
#1. I love pie. I hate cake. The end.
#2. You live in apple country, my friend. Just WAIT until mid-september, when the trees ripen gloriously with fruit and you can get bushels full at roadside stands.
#3. Now I want an apple.
20. Anyabeth | September 2nd, 2008 at 5:54 am
Oh dear pie. I wonder if I can find some for breakfast.
As for Palin, I admit that initially I sort of rolled that scandal around in my head because it was just sort of interesting given all the crap that gets thrown around about Obama. But it just feels sort of gross. There are so many things to dislike about the woman’s experience and politics and actions that I don’t need anything else. And also, the preggo teenaged daughter could happen to anyone. Can’t really judge her for that.
21. Jess | September 2nd, 2008 at 5:54 am
I like pie FILLING but not pie CRUST. I KNOW. It’s made out of PURE FAT. I should LOVE IT. But I don’t.
Also, I read that Cindy McCain said that Palin has relevant experience because Alaska is the closest state to Russia, and therefore Palin understands what’s at stake. That reasoning ranks right up there with “she’s a mother” on the scale of ARE YOU SERIOUS?
22. jonniker | September 2nd, 2008 at 5:59 am
HA HA HA, I read that about Russia. I also saw Tucker Bounds in an interview with Campbell Brown try to spin her experience governing Alaska and, in theory, controlling the National Guard, as MILITARY EXPERIENCE. MILITARY EXPERIENCE. Oh, by the way, in 2007, governors have been WIDELY stripped of their power over the National Guard, so how about no, Tucker? HOW ABOUT NO, NO, she does not control the National Guard. Or where they’re deployed. Or anything. Oh my God, Tucker, you are an ASSHOLE.
23. nonsoccermom | September 2nd, 2008 at 6:15 am
I totally agree with the above opinions re: Palin. This ought to be interesting for sure.
Also, PIE = YUMMY. And APPLES = YUMMY.
24. She Likes Purple | September 2nd, 2008 at 6:20 am
Apples and lemons have been consistently kind to me over the last handful of months. Apples with a scoop of peanut butter have been even kinder.
Love pie. All kinds. Especially this one particular apple crisp pie I have a recipe for that is heavenly with a side of French vanilla ice cream.
25. Sadie | September 2nd, 2008 at 6:39 am
I like pie. I like it a lot. This weekend I made my first-ever peach pie, and I soaked the peaches in Grand Marnier, and then I ate it ALL.
The ‘mask of pregnancy’ almost seems a scarier pregnancy side-effect than hemmorhoids, to me. I mean, it’s your FACE. And sometimes it doesn’t GO AWAY.
Finally, Sarah Palin: governor for 16 months of a state whose entire population is smaller than that of many American cities (650k) does not, in my mind, count as adequate or appropriate “experience” for someone who could very likely inherit a presidency from an elderly man with a history of cancer. Never mind that her politics are totally fucked, in my opinion, and her abstinence education beliefs SURE DID WORK GOOD on her own kid – if you run for vice president, your ass is getting criticized whether you’re wearing a skirt or not. So Bachman should shut the fuck up.
26. Regina | September 2nd, 2008 at 6:52 am
hmmmm pie and fall my favorites. i too can’t wait for fall and am very aware come January i will be sorry i pushed for summer to be gone, but i don’t care right now all i can think of is fall and leaves, and squash, and apples, and sweaters, and boots (nice pretty boots)! There i am done now.
27. Jamie | September 2nd, 2008 at 6:58 am
Umm, yeah. I agree that we, as a nation/media, should lay off of Palin’s family. But you cannot deny that the irony/hypocrisy of a teenage pregnancy in the family of a politician who claims to advocate abstinence is significant and notable. Nic is SO RIGHT – if Palin gets to judge my uterus (and any possible fruits of it), then I get to have an opinion of hers (and its offspring).
That said, I have an admission for the group. I HATE pie a la mode. I have to have the ice cream separate – and NEVER touching the pie. And I like my pie cold. Never warmed. No drizzles, no ice cream, no liquids on it that didn’t originate in it. I’m like the Amish with pie. I just want the pie. Nothing else fancy.
28. Janssen | September 2nd, 2008 at 7:14 am
I think my knee-jerk reaction to pie is “yuck” because I think of those horrendous pulled-straight from the freezer pies, but when I really think of sweet lovely homemade pie, well, then yes, yes, yes. Every time, over cake. Or maybe both.
29. Gaby | September 2nd, 2008 at 7:47 am
Lara, I too am a big fan of the Birthday Pie! Not weird! I had a cherry pie every year for I don’t know how long, and I loved it. Now I am married to a man who doesn’t like cherry anything…I love him, but he is so misguided.
Jonna, I hope you have luck finding a good rental home. I’m in the process of looking for a house to buy, and it (the process) makes me want to pull my hair out, and I don’t have a baby brewing to consider. Ugh. Best of luck, girlie.
30. Lawyerish | September 2nd, 2008 at 9:24 am
Michele Bachman is a loony. Did you see her eyes during that interview? There was some serious crazy going on there.
As for pie, I am not averse to it, but I don’t seek it out that often and I never, ever make my own. I’m not sure why that is. Maybe because I equate pie with holidays, so it feels off-limits the rest of the year? Pumpkin is my favorite by a large margin, but I am also very supportive of crumble-topped apple.
31. Kristin H | September 2nd, 2008 at 9:27 am
Ooo, pie. I had no idea there were so many pie-lovers out there. Because I love pie but everyone in my house hates it. So I go through phases where I make lots of pies–homemade crust! varied flavors!–and they sit and they sit and then they get thrown out. My house is no refuge for pie, I’m sorry to say.
32. H | September 2nd, 2008 at 10:03 am
Another Minnesotan here who agrees with Amanda and Swistle about Bachman. As far as I’m concerned, Bristol Palin is off limits but THE CANDIDATE is not. Her platform and views are completely 100% relevant.
And for the record, I have no sympathy for Pawlenty.
I laughed, out loud, when I saw McCain on TV the day Palin was announced and he said one of the reasons she is qualified for the job because she governs the largest state in the union, or something to that effect. News flash to McCain — the geographical size of Alaska does NOT make her particularly qualified to be Vice President! Good grief, that’s one of the dumbest things I’ve heard. (See Sadie’s comment re: Alaska’s POPULATION — which also, in and of itself, does not qualify one for the job, but it sure as hell is more relevant!)
Pie is yummy. I prefer fruit or any shade of chocolate.
33. Jen | September 2nd, 2008 at 10:22 am
This past weekend I stumbled upon a booth at the fair that made FRESH PIES all day long. I had a slice of raspberry pie with vanilla ice cream and OHMYGOD it was the best pie I have ever had in my LIFE. In fact, when I went to throw away my (licked clean) plate and the man working the booth asked me how I liked my slice, I may have said (a bit too enthusiastically), “OH MY, that was the absolute BEST pie I have EVER had!” and continued to gush for a good five minutes about the pie until his eyes started to glaze over.
Something about pregnancy and pie is just a jolly good combination. I’m about 14 weeks along now, and I would probably do just about anything for another piece of that pie!
34. diane | September 2nd, 2008 at 10:35 am
Yum Pie! As long as you’re asking Strawberry Rhubarb. ooh, and apple , all warm and gooey.
35. Ang | September 2nd, 2008 at 10:40 am
I love apples and love pie and love making apple pie – but don’t like eating it if that makes any sense. Luckily my husband loves it.
If you’re inexperienced in pie crust, may I recommend Martha Stewart’s Pies & Tarts? Lots of odd yet tasty flavors – and on pages 198-199 she gets very detailed on how to make a good crust – which is my favorite part. My mom is still convinced that pie-crust-in-a-box is just fine – blech.
36. elise | September 2nd, 2008 at 10:47 am
I, too, was unhealthily obsessed with the whole Rachel McAdams/Ryan Gosling thing, and I hadn’t heard anything about their potential reunion – until now! So thanks for that.
37. -R- | September 2nd, 2008 at 11:39 am
Back to add that I LOVE PIE. This weekend, I had a piece of chocolate cream pie with a layer of banana slices and a pieceof blueberry pie. LOVE.
38. ZestyJenny | September 2nd, 2008 at 12:01 pm
1. LOVE Ryan Gosling as of this weekend. I know I am the last to see Lars and The Real Girl, but OH MY GOD, I just want to take him home in that movie. SO sweet. Everyone, please rent this RIGHT NOW if you missed it.
2. I am very sorry, Jonna, but I am anti-pie. Like Swistle, if it is hot, and there is lots of icecream, it’s ok, I guess. But I would never choose it or make it. I am mostly not in favor of cooked fruit. To me, dessert is not dessert unless it is chocolate.
3. And ugh, Palin. I too, will not attack a sister, but PLEASE. As a former Hillary supporter, they must think I’m pretty stupid if they think just becase they put some boobs on the ticket I’ll be voting for McCain. And I don’t want to hear a WORD about not abusing Palin. I very nearly had to move to Canada I was so sickened by the misogynistic crap Hillary had to withstand. Until I see a bumpersticker that says, “Run, Palin, Run (to be placed on front bumper only)” Like I saw a couple of months ago, then she is still not taking as much as Hillary got. Thems the breaks of being a woman in politics, and it’s society that needs to change, not the democrats.
(that was a ramblig tirade. If it is not clear, I was agreeing with you.)
39. thatgirlfromcolorado | September 2nd, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Big yay on the pie. And if you think apples are pregnancy manna … have you tried watermelon lately? Or maybe some crisp, juicy green grapes?
40. Danell | September 2nd, 2008 at 1:27 pm
I think all of the political candidates are bat-shit crazy. Obama included….you take your family and your children to a church with a “spiritual leader” that rants on all crazy-like with that sort of hatred and the best you can come up with is “I wasn’t there that day?” Don’t get me wrong, I’m not religious AT ALL but if I were, I don’t think I could listen to someone preach that way for that long if I were in total disagreement with it. But clearly, most people don’t have an issue with this…I just don’t get it.
Pie: meh…I’ll take doughnuts. My mom is distraught that I don’t have any desire to learn how to make pie crust, since she can whip up a perfect one in seconds.
41. Blythe | September 2nd, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I tried to figure out what was bothering me about Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy story. I don’t think she should be judged for her daughter’s choices, or that her daughter should be branded a Fallen Woman. And then I realized it bothers me that Sarah Palin agreed to run, knowing that she would be putting her daughter in the international spotlight during a really difficult time. Even if Bristol gave the OK.
42. NGS | September 2nd, 2008 at 2:03 pm
I’m going to have to agree with the Minnesotans in the comments – Bachman is INSANE. There, I said it. She’s treated like a rock star in the Republican party around here, but let’s face it, it’s the Republican party in Minnesota. Not much of a party.
Ah, Palin and the daughter. I think the most interesting story is whether or not the McCain campaign knew about it ahead of time. Either they did know and were trying to hide it from the public, which is really bad OR they didn’t know and they didn’t do their research, which makes me really nervous that our potential next commander in chief doesn’t know how to do research! Argh!
Pie: Eh. I’d rather have ice cream!
43. Suebob | September 2nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I hate to say this, but pie is lost on me. I could go the rest of my life without eating another slice of pie. It is usually just good fruit, ruined. Now strudel is a different animal. Go figure.
44. zandor | September 2nd, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Lars And The Real Girl is a great movie. I agree with the other person who said this. Also, apple pie is the best.
45. Kristabella | September 2nd, 2008 at 5:17 pm
I love apple pie. Not so much any of the other fruit pies. But if Baker’s Square makes one with peanut butter something or other in it, I WILL eat it. And also, I’m so with you on the Palin thing. It will be an interesting campaign season.
46. Susan | September 2nd, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I’m not too big on fruit pie, but add some kind of cream or chocolate and I’m all over it.
Trying to keep some distance from the whole Palin situation, I’m hoping it will just go away.
47. Shutter Bitch | September 3rd, 2008 at 6:16 am
My sister and I once had a contest on Thanksgiving day to see how many pieces of pie we could eat. I had to stop after 4. I outweigh her by about 75 pounds. She stopped after EIGHT fucking pieces of pie. She couldnt just stop at 5 to beat me. No. She had to annihilate me. She tormented me when I had to stop at 4 by saying what you said: more pie for me. Why was there so much pie to be had? My father is The Pie Man. He makes, shit you not, at least eight whole pies for Turkey Day. He loves pie. And passed that love onto my sister and me. For which my waistband says fuck you very much, Dad.
48. Shutter Bitch | September 3rd, 2008 at 6:18 am
Also, the trick to the best flakiest crust? Just follow the Betty Crocker recipe for pie crust, and right before you put it in the oven to bake, brush it lightly with a little water. Flaky. Mmmmm.

Yes, pie. Yummy Pie. Oh, yes, especially these, which freeze…
http://www.notmartha.org/tomake/piesbakedintinyjars/
Renting too and similarly frustrated. Only I am 34. Ugh.
Congrats again… I am taking notes for my own (hopeful) future events!

Pumpkin pie! *love* Mrs. Smith’s is far better than mine. Eat the pie.
51. Kris T | September 3rd, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Ok, just started reading your blog through Two Busy. No I’m not pregnant, nor do I plan to be. We have pets no kids….but PIE, yes, your posing a question about pie forced me to delurk. Pie is YUMMY! Apple and Key lime are my hubby and I’s Fave (though Strawberry rhubarb should not be neglected
Nor pumpkin or…ok I’ll stop now.
52. velocibadgergirl | September 4th, 2008 at 4:49 am
“Windex of pregnancy” HA!!
Also, I am a cake person, though I love pumpkin pie and pecan pie. Don’t hate me! My husband, on the other hand, is a Cake Hater and lifetime Pie Lover, so I guess it balances out somewhat.
53. Violet | September 4th, 2008 at 8:53 am
My favorite thing during my recent pregnancy was cherry pie – they have mini ones in the freezer section that you heat in the microwave. Ok, not nearly as good as homemade, but when the craving hits and you can have warm cherry pie in 5 minutes… heaven!
Palin… my biggest concern, aside from her inexperience, is the distraction factor. Maybe it’s just me, but I would not be able to focus 100% on my job with 5 kids, one of them pregnant or with a newborn, and one of them with Downs. I just wouldn’t. Not that I think she needs to stay home with them, I just think that being vice-president or possibly president is a MAJOR undertaking and you should expect it to take over most of your time and energy, and how can it with all that is already going on in her life?
And congratulations on the baby! I’m a longtime lurker, finally posting.
54. Mauigirl52 | September 4th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
I love fruit pies! Would rather have pie than cake or anything else. Strawberry-rhubarb. 3-berry. Blueberry. Cherry. Mmmmm. Has to have both good crust and good filling, they have to be perfectly balanced.
Agree on Palin. We need to be able to criticize her stands on the issues. I do agree with Violet that having 5 kids including a special needs child, would be a challenge to her focus on her duties. But the bigger issue is her lack of any viable experience…she hasn’t thought about Iraq, hasn’t been out of the country, no policy experience of any kind. I couldn’t believe the way she – and everyone else – kept repeating that she has “executive experience” – from being governor of a state that has less population than the nearby city of Newark, NJ near where I live. Heck, I think I’d rather the mayor of Newark were running for the GOP VP than Palin. Of course, that wouldn’t happen because he’s a Democrat!
