Cheeseburger (or is it a hot dog?) in Paradise

October 20th, 2008

So, we know. For like 99% certainty and stuff, seen from multiple angles — my doctor said she wouldn’t even have TOLD us, if she wasn’t sure beyond almost all reasonable doubt, and after seeing for myself, I tend to agree. First and foremost, however, the baby is developing totally fine, and has all of its fingers, toes, heart chambers and brain-y type stuff, and it turns out when I feel kicks, I’m sometimes feeling PUNCHES. Who knew?

I just had to get that important stuff out of the way before I started squeeing madly, because I am suddenly so freaking excited about this baby I CAN HARDLY SEE STRAIGHT OMFG AM SO EXCITED.

It’s a girl. I’m having a daughter. A DAUGHTER. That’s my DAUGHTER punching me in the bladder!

My daughter. Oh my God.

OH. MY. GOD. I’m having a daughter. I’m someone’s MOTHER. AND THAT SOMEONE IS A GIRL.

(Hi! I’m crying again! I started the second she told me and I HAVE NOT STOPPED. She’s healthy and perfect and a GIRL. Although it’s been so hard and annoying and stressy and painful, I’m not sure I’ve ever felt so completely lucky. And also, Adam is way outnumbered now, three to one, dog included.)

I am, also, completely touched and also crying at your kindness and curiosity. Seriously. CRYING. HOLD ME. And thank you.

Happy, happy Monday/Tuesday.

(Note: We also love baby boys, but GIRLS! We love them!)

  • 27. Blythe  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Doesn’t knowing just make everything so much more real? Like it’s not some genderless alien in there, it’s an alien with a vagina?

Seriously, it is just so thrilling. For all of us. Thanks for sharing the whole experience.

  • 28. KT  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Congrats! Now you can put her in little dresses!!

  • 29. Stacy  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

Yay! For me it”s so hard to actually BELIEVE it’s a girl, even when they say they’re sooo sure. Because you’re just looking for “something” to be missing, to know if it’s a girl! With my first, I didn’t wash clothes, etc, until after she was born because I was terrified she would randomly pop out as a boy! But isn’t it wonderful to finally know? Congrats!

  • 30. jonniker  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

OMG thank you everyone. This is not helping to stop the crying (HAVE. NOT. STOPPED.)

The New Girl NAILED it: she’s a person now! A real, live person! A PERSON! With a sex! And all her parts!

Stacy: We saw a little more than just the absence of a thingydoodle — there were those three lines! And a very distinctive vaginal-looking thing! Which is when oh my God, we knew for sure. It’s a she.

    Holy shit.

  • 31. -R-  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Oh congrats! Been following your pregnancy travails and I’m happy for your good news!

I remember that 20 week ultrasound with my daughter, how it suddenly seeming so real. A pronoun! A vagina! And now that blob that was inside me is beside me watching tap dance recitals on youtube and jabbing her small, little elbows into my small little pregnant belly and it all just blows my mind.

  • 43. aly  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Now you get to start squeeing and crying over all the adorable shoes and dresses and coats and fluffy hats with animal ears. My husband has made only one decree concerning baby girl clothes – “Ours can’t wear any of those stupid elastic headbands with bows on them!”

  • 46. Allison  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

  • 47. Kate @ Life As I Life It  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Being a mom of both, I can tell you there’s a special sweetness about little girls. The innocence, the charm, the smiles, the flirty shyness….ahhh, absolutely breath-taking and you’ll both be wrapped mercilessly around her tiny little pink finger the minute you lay eyes on her.

A huge congratulations to you both! I’m so happy for your happiness.

  • 48. Gaby  |  October 20th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

  • 74. Ann  |  October 21st, 2008 at 3:48 am

I’ve been reading for quite some time now but am never one to comment. That said, I had to come out of hiding to say congratulations! I’m pregnant right now (hello, due date of 10/20! goodbye, due date of 10/20!) and I know I’ll be reading as you continue with your pregnancy and ultimately bring your little girl into the world. Congratulations!

  • 75. justAcliche  |  October 21st, 2008 at 4:01 am

Congrats! Tell your husband I can sympathize. I have 4 boys, male dog & husband. But Squeeee – girl clothes.

  • 76. Jessie  |  October 21st, 2008 at 4:05 am

I clicked over thinking maybe you had the same strong cheeseburger craving I had when I was pregnant, but this is so much better! Congratulations! Baby girls are just the best (although I might be a bit biased), but beware the inability to stop buying adorable girly clothing.

  • 77. Jen  |  October 21st, 2008 at 4:37 am

Congratulations!! What a lucky girl she’s going to be! If you dress your dog so adorably, I can only imagine how sassy your daughter will be :)

And I’m with ZestyJenny – feeling slightly jealous of the finder outers! I’ve got to hold strong for 19 weeks still, with no idea whether I’m carrying a penis or vagina in there!

  • 88. annabanana  |  October 21st, 2008 at 7:17 am

Can’t stop crying either. Had to wipe the eyes to make my blithering way thru the post. I KNEW! I could not be happier for you. And now my next prediction is that your darling daughter will come out looking just like her hunky dad. In a girly pretty way. Adam in a dress. A baby girl with a ball cap. That’s what I got. They got some serious genes those men and I’ve oft observed that first borns seem to most resemble their parent of the opposite sex. Oh such joy awaits you Jonna. Such unadulterated, inexplicable joy. You will see. You won’t be able to take your eyes off her. Oh And you will sleep. Shushypie you negatron naysayers. Some moms get sleep. I got tons. I slept when my babes slept and I know I was very lucky that their fav hobby was sleeping. Jonna your luck will continue and she will be sweet, beautiful sleepy girl. Huge hugs to you and your belly! When are you coming to Boston next???
    Congratulations again.

  • 89. Jess  |  October 21st, 2008 at 7:37 am
