Another Saturday Night

January 10th, 2009

Honestly, there is no good reason for this other than:
1) What else is there to do when you’re pregnant on a cold, icy Saturday night? Although to be fair, I wasn’t expecting this, and was lumbering into the bedroom for the night. At like, SEVEN.
2) The stroller arrived! All hail the orange Quinny Zapp! Which was the ONLY THING that would calm my absurd nesting instincts, for completely illogical reasons, but there you have it.
3) We had just wrapped a nearly hour-long tutorial wherein I could NOT figure out how to break down the goddamn stroller, nor could I put it back up. I … I was sweating. And my belly got in the way. And … oh whatever.
4) Being pregnant is the only time you’ll see me in horizontal stripes. Ever.

Hope you’re having a great weekend!

Get an inexpensive sling and carry your baby around on your chest. It’s way easier and she will be a happier camper with that arrangement too. Seriously, I have three kids and I barely used a stroller until they started wearing shoes. (Then they wanted to walk everywhere anyway)

One thing I’ve learned from talking to a lot of different people is that all babies are different, and what works for one doesn’t work for another — some people use the stroller/carseat combo immediately, some don’t. Slings are godsends for some babies, banes for others. I plan to try them all out and see what works for ours. But I’m still glad I have the stroller.

And anyway, we don’t plan to use the stroller without its carseat (as shown here) until she’s older. But my nesting instincts would not allow for me to relax until it was in our home in case of some sort of STROLLING EMERGENCY.

When I was shopping for a stroller I literally got wedged between two rows of displays because I misjudged the ridiculous enormousness of my belly.

  • 4. Kelley  |  January 10th, 2009 at 7:06 pm

That is reason number 14 of why I am glad I am not having any more babies.

    Not really.

    Gotta make a list.

I would trade my teens for a baby in a heart beat.

    Not really.

    Kinda.

Oh, ho, ho, when we got our stroller home (a Graco Duoglider- because holy shitweasel! TWINS!) we were so eager to try it out that we (true story) strapped out cat into it and pushed her around the house.

Anyway, that’s a pretty awesome stroller. And even if you do end up loving a sling or whatever (referring to above comments), you’ll still want a stroller. In fact, I’m so used to having one to stuff coats, purses, STUFF, shopping bags in, that I recently spent an entire adult-only shopping excursion cursing the fact that I had to CARRY my purchases and swearing to NEVER AGAIN shop without a stroller.

So there you have it. You are now aware of the full extent of my lameness.

Aw, you two are so cute. And Sunny is so cute. And you live in a house that looks like actual adults live there, which is cute, unlike mine, which looks like an aging college student occupies the place.

I have no stroller/sling whatever advice. Isn’t that kind of refreshing? That’s why you must keep the childless around!

  • 7. TwoBusy  |  January 10th, 2009 at 7:40 pm

I just really enjoyed the Apocalyptic terms Adam used while spurring you on to action. “The world will end if you don’t open the stroller in 10 seconds!”

He was wrong that time, but you never know.

  • 8. H  |  January 10th, 2009 at 7:57 pm

Our stroller, from the late 80′s, was pretty easy to deal with but the strollers these days? Good grief! I don’t know if it is due to more stringent safety standards or a conspiracy to frustrate parents. My niece and nephews have had strollers that I absolutely could not open within Adam’s doomsday timeline. I’m always afraid I’m going to break the damn things as I try to open and close them. It was fun to see you and Sunny (and hear Adam)!

  • 9. Mandee  |  January 10th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

    Awesome!

My sister and I dressed a teddy bear in each of the going home outfits to test them out. Then we strapped it in the Bjorn for good measure. She NEVER played dolls when we were little so she wanted to practice.

Oh my God, I have owned so many stroller/joggers that I’ve lost count – and I think I tried any and every sling/wrap/pouch/backpack on the market at one time or another. “Whatever works at that particular moment” is my motto!

Once I put my infant daughter (who only liked a front carrier) in the stroller and did laps around my kitchen/living room circle for (no shit) 2 hours to get her to go to sleep for 15 minutes.

I love your attitude to try all things – that’s the way to go for your sanity!

  • 11. Jamie  |  January 10th, 2009 at 9:31 pm

I love the moment where, when A starts counting down on the “folding the stroller challenge,” you just put your hands on your hips and stare at the damn thing – and I picture a stream of obscenities floating across your mind. Awesome.

Also? Your voice does NOT sound anything like I thought it would. That’s not a bad thing, just surprised me is all. You have a lovely voice. :)

Also, part two? I can’t believe you can bend like that with a belly! GO YOU!

  • 12. Sadie  |  January 11th, 2009 at 8:23 am

OMG that was awesome, especially Adam’s quiet “oh, boom.” HA!
And you look fantastic, even all stressed out.

But what I really want to comment on is the video of your fucking dog, HILARIOUS camerawork and what is going to happen to poor Sunny when you don’t have time to light a cozy fire for her and give her a blankie anymore?!

  • 13. Amanda  |  January 11th, 2009 at 9:16 am

We’ve gone through two of those big ugly graco things that fold up with one hand, but they take up 98% of your trunk space and weight a million pounds. That one looks pretty sweet!

I’ve used infant car seats (the bucket is your friend!), strollers (5), baby bjorns, slings, etc, and my kids are both still alive, so there. Whatever works best!

BTW you are so adorable it hurts my cheeks.

  • 14. kirida  |  January 11th, 2009 at 10:27 am

Strollers aren’t intuitive, especially not for my husband. While I can fold ours with one hand, my husband will fuss with it until he gives up and rolls it over to me.

And I think you look very nice in stripes!

  • 15. She Likes Purple  |  January 11th, 2009 at 10:29 am

Oh my gosh, this video makes me love Adam so much. I always knew he had to be insanely hilarious, but this proves it. And you look fantastic in horizontal stripes or otherwise.

  • 16. Briana  |  January 11th, 2009 at 10:39 am

Now try to do it one handed while holding the baby in the other hand. (like at the airport when your husband decided to go through security first, and the D#$( TSA employees will not help you!) Then heft it up to waist level to shove it through the X-ray machine.

That was a REAL stroller emergency!

  • 17. Jenna  |  January 11th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

Love the video! It took me a month or more to be able to set up and break down our stroller without mentally picturing the owner’s manual.

And what is up with horizontal stripes in maternity wear?! I just bought a few tops for myself with horizontal stripes. I would NEVER buy horizontal stripes normally but these tops are comfy and look decent (aside from widening effect of the horizontal stripes). Perhaps I’ve given up on looking slim so now I’m just happy to have some pattern to hide my spills.

  • 18. Blythe  |  January 11th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

I loved seeing you on video!

I think I’ve stated before that we have a Zapp knockoff and it is orange too. After one plane journey with your baby+stroller combo, you’ll be able to put up and take down that thing in nothing flat.

Your new place looks great. I’m impressed that you look so moved-in; we barely look like we live here after almost 4 months.

  • 19. Emma  |  January 11th, 2009 at 3:38 pm

I’ve got an Orange Quinny (you know, one of 5 damn strollers we’ve ended up with after 2 kids in 2 years) and I love it the best – will never regret getting it. Enjoy!

  • 20. Fattylumpa  |  January 11th, 2009 at 6:59 pm

You are so quick and lithe with this complicated contraption! I love that Adam comes in with the camera and you not only just roll with it – but you knock it out of the park. I don’t think I could handle such a complicated series of maneuvers without alcohol, which, you know might be slightly FROWNED upon in said Delicate Condition.

  • 21. Jess  |  January 12th, 2009 at 6:36 am

I love the stroller! And it’s so COMPACT when it’s collapsed.

  • 22. claire  |  January 12th, 2009 at 7:03 am

You guys are too funny. The blank stare as you’re trying to figure out how to break it back down cracked me up.

    And Sunny is ADORABLE.

  • 23. Kristin H  |  January 12th, 2009 at 8:11 am

Too funny! Love the part where you’re wiping sweat from your brow. Also, your place looks v. cozy and remarkably bug-free.

  • 24. ali  |  January 12th, 2009 at 9:27 am

i used my zooper boogie for 3 years before learning how to collapse it.
    i swear to god.

  • 25. -R-  |  January 12th, 2009 at 3:36 pm

    I love Adam’s voice!

I didn’t practice using our stroller until the morning before my first trip alone with the baby. It was very important to me that I could open and shut the thing quickly considering it was December in Minnesota. Yuck.

PS Our baby hates the 2 slings we have, but loves the Ergo carrier and the carseat/stroller combo.

  • 26. Rhi  |  January 12th, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Okay, but can HE open and close the stroller in 10 seconds?

    It’s really only fair :)

  • 27. the new girl  |  January 14th, 2009 at 9:09 am

Oh, that is just the cutest, funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. “Not a healthy start,” cracked my shit RIGHT UP.

    Very awesome.

FYI: I could NOT figure out how to collapse my stupid UMBRELLA stroller (NOT complicated,) and with no one to ask, I’d just keep, like, KICKING THE BACK OF IT, until it folded. lmao.

I figured it out before her first birthday, though. Because I’m supah quick like that.

    xo

  • 28. movin down the road  |  January 14th, 2009 at 7:01 pm

the day I got RID of the damn stroller was a great great day. (nearly impossible to deal with, I would throw it in the back of my car completely OPEN because I could never get it folded up properly)

  • 29. Heather B.  |  January 16th, 2009 at 4:14 am

Oh, your voice! You’re like a real person. ;-)

  • 30. MonkeyPosh  |  January 23rd, 2009 at 10:52 pm

    Hi J!
You look GREAT! I hope you are doing well and feeling good and I am wishing you all the best for your new little baby on the way.
Oh and WHO KNEW Adam had such a sexy Dennis Leary voice????
And Sunny–don’t get me started. So cute.

    Again-wishing you the VERY BEST!
    xo

Graco Nautilus 3 In 1 Car Seat Safety Rating…

I was really excited about this car seat but now I am not so sure I like it. It was difficult for me to install rear facing (getting it tight enough). I had my dad help me and he was able to get it much tighter. I haven’ t had a problem instaliing any …
