My List

March 22nd, 2009

Things have gotten harder AND easier, if you can believe it. Easier because we’re no longer terrified we’re going to break her, and we’re used to her weird-ass movements and herky-jerky startle reflexes. Harder, because, if you didn’t know it before, sleep deprivation is cumulative.

(Side note: seriously, God? Newborns are FUCKED UP. The crazy leg shaking! The eye-rolling! The sneezing, hiccuping and grunting! And spitting up! The Moro reflex! SHIT THAT IS NORMAL BUT SHOULD NOT BE GOOGLED, LEST WE PANIC.)

(Needless to say, we Googled, freaked ourselves out for a moment and … well, she’s fine. Normal. Healthy. How do I know this? Because I called the pediatrician ON A SATURDAY with totally normal newborn behavior. Thank God she’s understanding, because IT WILL NOT BE THE LAST TIME.)

Anyway, despite being perpetually exhausted, she’s still absurdly over-the-top worth it, obviously, and is becoming more alert by the day. And on occasion, getting excited and very interested in her older sister:

Fascinated by her sister.

Sunny, by the way, has been great with Sam, although we’re too scared to let her get too close to her because she’s like an anvil on four tiny feet, but as soon as the kid porks up a little, I’m anticipating a little BFF action. Sunny is truly all NOM NOM WANT TO LICK BABY. GIMME. (And obviously we’re very careful, never leave them alone together, blah blah common sense blah.)

Anyway, I, uh, had more that I intended to write about baby gear, no less, but I am a little too wiped to even think about it and the kid is FINALLY ASLEEP. So, perhaps tomorrow.

For compensation for this lazy-ass excuse of an entry, would you accept baby lips?

Oh Sam.

I thought so.

Happy Monday! Or whatever day it is! I STILL DO NOT KNOW.

so, in that first picture, exactly WHAT PART of Sunny is that? I am more confused than Sam is.
Also, Jesus God, your baby is cute.

  • 2. jonniker  |  March 22nd, 2009 at 7:23 pm

HAHAHAHA, Sadie, that’s her head. They’re looking at each other. Adam is behind Sunny, looking at Sam from the same angle — her ear is on the left.

Oh, thank god. When we finally get Lila home, I’m going to be jumping at every move she makes–it’s good to know I’m not the only one. The startling and the crazy hiccup/gag/gasp thing she does scare the crap out of me every time. Oh and the SNEEZING!

And thanks for commenting abt the eating–I feel muuuch better knowing she’s not the one worried the food is about to run out. xo

oh my god , she is so delicious I can hardly stand it!! That newborn stage is far too short. I’m so happy to hear that you enjoying it. It’s allNORMAL!! She is so beautiful Jonna. I wish I could kiss those cheeks of hers. BTW, I was once unsure if my newborn rebecca was breathing because she slept so much, that I slipped a tiny clinique mirror under her nose to see the steam. This insane recommendation came from another new mom..but it works!!
How are you feeling? All sleep deprived, etc.? Sound like you’re doing great..
    Miss & love you,
    Banana

oh thank god, that’s Sunny’s ear.

  • 7. Beth Fish  |  March 22nd, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Wait, did I swallow your baby once before? Because it would be totally embarrassing to do it again. It just happens! I just intend to lick her a little bit, and the next thing I know, whoops, baby in my tummy.

  • 8. Anyabeth  |  March 22nd, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Ah I remember the newborn noises. Ramona had the hiccups every few hours for the first two months. So strange.

  • 9. metalia  |  March 22nd, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Has she done that thing yet, where it sounds like she’s…giggling in her sleep? JUST YOU WAIT.

(She is so adorable! And alert! And full of cheek-y goodness!)

In that first pic, Sam looks crafty, as if plotting the BFF-ness to come.

And the second pic? Is too precious for words.

I hope you sleep at least a little tonight!

  • 15. bessie.viola  |  March 23rd, 2009 at 8:51 am

Oh, she has the prettiest little mouth and the sweetest head of hair and oh my, she is just so precious.

I second TwoBusy – NO GOOGLE!!! Google + kids = panic. The equation is infallible.

    good god, the moro reflex!!!

  • 17. Jess  |  March 23rd, 2009 at 9:41 am

She is so cute. SO CUTE. And I love her hair. And I’m glad Sunny likes the baby so much! We are already worried about that with Montana, and that situation is a LONG WAY AWAY.

P.S. Speaking of Sunny and Montana, I keep thinking of that post about your neighbors blaming Sunny for something she didn’t do, and how she couldn’t have done it because she’s a girl and doesn’t lift her leg to pee. But Montana does that, and she’s a girl too! Why don’t we have a normal girl dog like yours??

  • 18. Jennifer  |  March 23rd, 2009 at 11:02 am

    She is just darling!

I once worked with a guy who had five children. When they brought the first baby home, one of their dogs managed to get a lick in, right in the kisser. Several years went by and the kid never got sick.

It became tradition that whenever a new baby was brought home, it would receive an official “welcome” from the dog. BLARGH.

  • 19. The New Girl  |  March 23rd, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Oh, she’s wicked beautiful, really. I love the picture of her with the wide-open eyes.

I agree you should stop googling PRONTO. And also? My kid had that moro reflex for SO LONG and her arms would WHIP STRAIGHT UP any time she wasn’t swaddled. I have a million pictures of her asleep with her arms extended, totally over her head. I’d forgotten that until I read your post.

    Cute cutie!

I love the “blah blah common sense blah” about child/dog safety. I am a complete slacker parent/dog owner, and I did leave the dog and the baby unattended, mostly because the dog would not leave the baby unattended. (Yes, I know better. I’m a nurse; my sister is a veterinarian.) They are still buds, even after the time the teething infant bit the dog. And the dog. didn’t. move. I told the dog he didn’t have to stay, he could walk away, but no. He stayed.
Do not Google. I’m a nurse: I know way too much about obscure diseases already. Those would be the obscure diseases I never, ever see in the hospital but only remember from textbooks.
Sam is beautiful. You are doing great. I’d send you a nap if I could.

So glad to hear it’s going well! I remember way back when, you were worried about sleep deprivation and the fact that you do not do well on little sleep. Being tired isn’t fun, but it’s okay when you’ve got a sweet baby around.

  • 22. Sarah @ BecomingSarah.com  |  March 23rd, 2009 at 5:05 pm

I’ll accept baby photos any time! She’s adorable! (Well done).

  • 23. Kerri Anne  |  March 24th, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I’m not unconvinced that baby lips could solve the current economic crisis.

Adorable, that one. (And Sunny, too, of course!)

  • 24. Hollylynne  |  March 25th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

She’s just so gorgeous! I haven’t congratulated you sooner since I was away for my wedding when she was born . . . so somewhat belatedly, CONGRATS!

  • 25. Amanda  |  March 25th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Oh, but that little hand under her face. Zoiks, the cute! I came here from your clusterfeeding tweet and have to say that after three girls all very fond of nursing for eleventy hours at a time, my husband wills till say, “She was up? Really? Wow, you must be as tired as I am then.”

    I’m a saint that he’s still walking.

  • 26. Danielle-Lee  |  April 17th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

The startle reflex-it always makes me giggle.
OMG, I just want to snuggle Sam. She is precious! And those lips! Seriously, NOM NOM NOM.
