All the Pretty Faces

January 7th, 2010

Yo yo yo, the houseguests are gone, the short ribs and lasagna have been eaten, but slimy sick baby remains! The Nosefrida has been in steady use and BLEEEEAAARRRRRGH.

That’s all I have to say about that, I promise. But that’s where I’ve been, if you were wondering. And because I am exhausted, despite the fact that my kid is now fairly consistently sleeping through (THROUGH) the night (OMFG THE NIGHT), this will be brief.

- For the holidays/my birthday, I got both a Keurig and a Wii Fit. (Yes, I know, I am spoiled, and I have no idea why, but Adam went a little OVERBOARD this holiday season.) To say I am thrilled with both is a VAST UNDERSTATEMENT, and I am hula hooping my ASS off, quite literally, although I am a little embarrassed about that time that my Mii dropped the hoop and I — my actual, non-Mii self — BENT OVER TO PICK IT UP. A FAKE HULA HOOP THAT ONLY EXISTS ON TEEVEE.

And also! I am HIGHLY CAFFEINATED. When I first got the Keurig, I was so excited to be able to make a cup of coffee whenever I wanted that I spent three solid days drinking five to six cups a day. A DAY. I did not sleep! I was having LEG CRAMPS AT NIGHT FROM CAFFEINE-INDUCED DEHYDRATION! And yet, I could not be stopped. I have since purchased several non-caffeinated K-cup varieties, and have removed my body from the ceiling, though it required some assistance.

- Speaking of leg cramps, a side effect of one of my medications is RLS — better known as FUCKING JIMMY LEGS. Suddenly, all of those ads for Requip make a lot of sense, because every night, I climb into bed to read before nodding off and though I can hardly keep my eyes open, it’s taking EVERYTHING I HAVE to stop myself from running around the kitchen island until the feeling passes. Why, jimmy leg, WHY?

- In BOOK CLUB NEWS, we’re announcing the book Monday! It has already been selected! And I am finalizing the place where we will discuss and enjoy! AT OUR LEISURE! I have not forgotten you, friends! It was just … the holidays and then the guests and the sick baby and OY HOW DOES IT ALL HAPPEN AT ONCE?

- I … well, that’s kind of all I’ve got, although I DID put together a list of 2010 goals, like my girl Jennie, and I am EXCITED about them. EXCITED.

And with that, I’ll leave you with my happy bunny, smiling through the snot, yo.

Happy

Happy weekend!

So can you hula hoop in real life? If not, have you tried since getting all hoopy with your virtual self? There is a new hoop dance class at my gym and I’d like to try it but haven’t been a successful hooper (hular?) since I was a kid and am mortified to try again in public. I am hopeful that my problem lies in having only ever had a child-sized hoop to try and that maybe I wouldn’t look like such a herky jerky idiot if I had a bigger one. If the Wii can function as an instructor on this, I may have to go hang out at my (lucky) friend’s house and play with hers.

Also, I have a baby just a month or two younger than Sam and so I am usually biased exclusively toward the cuteness of my own child but she is AWESOME. Shiny happy baby WITH HAIR (my children are bald until two, is unfortunate)!!

Have you tried taking iron supplements for the RLS? I had it with my second pregnancy so bad I could barely sleep. I started taking iron supplements for my pregnancy induced anemia and it went away. I did some googling on those long sleepless nights and somewhere I read that iron deficiency can cause RLS.

    OK, maybe it’s just me but when I read Jimmy Legs I spit crackers out on my keyboard I was laughing so hard. Hilarious. {and messy!}

  • 5. leigh  |  January 7th, 2010 at 11:35 pm

No, not the Jimmy legs! Have you tried valium? I use it for most things.

    Samantha is SO cute.

Um, do we get to know about the goals?

  • 6. She Likes Purple  |  January 7th, 2010 at 11:39 pm

Oh, are you going to share your list! I bet there would be several of yours I’d like to steal for myself.

  • 7. kim  |  January 7th, 2010 at 11:50 pm

That little lady is so cute! She has such a grown up face. I am super excited about the book club! I just finished the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse novels based on your recommendation and love it. Can’t wait to see what book you picked.

I was thinking that I missed the book club announcement somehow, but PHEW!

    Bring it on, girls.

  • 9. bemytomato  |  January 8th, 2010 at 12:26 am

Oh, Sam is so cute. It’s just ridiculous.

I’ve done the Wii hoop stoop too. Really glad I’m not the only one. Sucks about the RLS… I hope there’s a cure for you. No fun at all.

Hooray for book club! I can’t wait.

Oh, now, that is one very pretty little girl. I mean, I know I’ve seen photos of her in the past, but each time I am so pleasantly jolted at how lovely she is. And I’m not just saying that because I want you to like me (though I DO want you to like me) but, well, I guess I forgot where I was going with this sentence.

But I do have a Burning Question for you, and I hope that you don’t mind if I ask it. I’m wondering if you are still nursing Sam… and if so, how you feel about the little slug trails ON YOUR BREAST. I ask because when I was nursing, those damn snot marks just blew MY everloving MIND. I mean, I’d spent my whole life avoiding my *own* snot, and now, here I was, walking around with someone else’s SNOT STREAM drying on my breast. I guess what surprised me the most was the fact that I DIDN’T need to shower/sanitize after each feeding. That my child’s boogers, on my BREASTS, were just… normal.

Also, the snot-on-boob phenomena was one I completely forgot about between the first two babies and the the third. When the third got her first cold, I was blown away- ANEW!

Enjoy your WIi Fit! The Wii Fit PLus software is EVEN BETTER and more fun.

    Your daughter is darling :)

  • 12. Swistle  |  January 8th, 2010 at 6:48 am

Oh, I love the hula hooping!

  • 13. jonniker  |  January 8th, 2010 at 8:00 am

Sahara: I’ve never hula hooped in real life. I’m too scared! Do you know how STUPID I look doing it on the Wii? I cannot imagine in real life! HA!

SBM: It’s a side effect of one of my meds, so I don’t know if iron or anything would help.

Leigh: Valium! HA! I think it would interact with the med that causes the RLS, but it is TEMPTING.

Marie: HAHAHAHAHA First, I like you whether you say my daughter is beautiful or not. But yes, I’m still nursing and yes, the slime, YES. And YES, I’m amazed at how I am bothered by the slime only marginally. I mean, I SUCK HER SNOT OUT with an apparatus and just rinse it out like it’s NO BIG DEAL. It’s so weird, this motherhood thing. I mean, ditto poop. Someone else’s! I’m just all, eh, it’s just poop. WHO AM I?

JMH: I have the Wii Fit Plus! I can’t do the kung fu yet. They do one move that has me scratching my head in confusion.

  • 14. kris  |  January 8th, 2010 at 8:35 am

Am loving the hula hoop thing — you are not alone! At least once a week I try to rewind the car radio. IT’S NOT TIVO, KRIS. Le sigh.

Great picture of Sam — so sweet. Wishing you a snot apparatus-free weekend!

  • 15. Shelly  |  January 8th, 2010 at 8:57 am

    Sam is SO SO cute!

And I AM SO EXCITED about the book club! Will be absolutely dying to hear what the book is.

Oh I am so sorry that you have the jimmy legs!!! I had RLS during both of my pregnancies for the last 4 or 5 months of each. It was by far the worst symptom of pregnancy for me. Worse than the gestational diabetes, heartburn, peeing every hour…by FAR. I hope you can figure out a way to get rid of it soon. So annoying.

  • 17. Mrs. D  |  January 8th, 2010 at 10:06 am

Yay for Keurig! Those K-cups make life so easy! In your face, Starbucks – I don’t need you and your hoity-toity baristas any longer!

So sorry to hear about the RLS. Such a weird and frustrating feeling.

  • 18. Jess  |  January 8th, 2010 at 10:28 am

But I want to SEE the list of 2010 goals. Will you be posting it here?

  • 19. Annabelle  |  January 8th, 2010 at 11:25 am

The hula hoop game is SO FUN. The main downside being how much my wife laughs at me while I’m doing it.

(sorry. I just started drinking coffee this week. feeling a little twitchy.)

  • 21. mar  |  January 8th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

thanks for being so nice on fb when i harassed you about the bookclub. i am remiss in checking my e-mail lately, so i was afraid it had gone to spamland.
and guess who just ordered the wii fit plus online over lunch break? *snort* it was at multiple people’s recommendation & i had it in my cart when i wandered over to read your latest. we’ll see how the hula-ing goes. i’m a moron on the regular wiifit.

  • 22. diane  |  January 8th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

Your daughter is incredibly adorable with such great expressions Yay for book club, Looking forward to it.
So timely for me that you mentioned overdosing on the keurig..after being laid off recently I find myself with time to experiment with different K-cup flavors..and my twitching over caffeinated limbs are paying the price!

  • 23. JenniferL  |  January 8th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Sam is gorgeous. Edible. We’ve had a month of snot at my house and … it’s just gross. My 14mo old slimed a couch pillow and it looks like we had a snail plague. Especially nice when I’m wearing black and he thinks I’m a tissue.

Might I join your book club?! I’m making “read more” a goal for 2010 (vague much?) and would be very interested to see what you pick! my email is mizlarson at yahoo dot com

I’ve been lurking since Moon Cup days and also have resolved to stop being just a looky loo on the blogs I read …

  • 24. The New Girl  |  January 8th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Baaaa ha haaaaa on the hula hoop.

Also? Do those PJ’s have bunny feet?? We have those same ones, I think. Teh Cute.

The baby, too, obv. Cutie cute.

  • 25. Erica  |  January 8th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

UGH! I totally have pregnancy-induced Jimmy Leg. I’m ready to chop my effing legs off at the knee every damn night.

Also, I’m wicked stoked about the book club. Yea Jonna!

  • 26. H  |  January 8th, 2010 at 9:29 pm

You know what? I got the hula hoop shanks! I can’t believe it. I was a Wii hoola hooping natural the first month or so, and now – I don’t know what happened, but I can’t keep the stupid hoops up no matter what I do! Eventually, if I try often enough, I can get them going until the time runs out but then my score sucks. Whoever designed the Wii software was a genius, as far as getting inside my head, because I CARE about the score, I CARE if the animated Wii balance board congratulates me, and I CARE if it says “ooohhh” or “great” when I step on it! (And I love when it tells me I have great abs even though I know it only measures if my feet touch the board during the jack knife exercise.)

  • 27. TwoWishes Tara  |  January 9th, 2010 at 12:40 am

So I know I recently commented to say we have the same life, and if I keep going on that theme it’s going to get (even more) stalker-y, but…. We have those PJs. “Snuggle Bunnies” and bunny feet, right? She’s so ridiculously snuggly whenever she wears them that I simply can’t stand it.

    Also, your daughter? Adorable!

  • 28. Katarina  |  January 9th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

    Sam is a real cutie!

  • 29. Shin Ae  |  January 9th, 2010 at 9:07 pm

Your happy bunny is gorgeous and “jimmy legs” cracked me up. Is that a real slang-y sort of thing? I never heard it; we always said “kicky legs.” “Jimmy legs” is a thousand times funnier.

  • 30. Li  |  January 10th, 2010 at 6:12 pm

    That baby is GORGEOUS!

re: RLS — I have suffered that malady for years. and it stinks! and got way worse while i was pregnant. have you flown with that shit? try sitting for like 5+ hours in a tiny plane when all you want to do is run around and you are in the window seat and two obese people who just WILL NOT WAKE UP sit between you and the aisle…. sorry, was having a disturbing flashback!

avoid medicating it if you can, those treatments are way addictive and have lot o’ creepy side effects — like compulsive gambling and other personality changers! as much as it sucks, i use good old fashioned wartm showers before bed, deep breathing, and praying for sleep.
