Nothing to see here …

Whoo! Weekend of high drama: Sunny got eaten by a dog, there’s a mysterious coconut smell in my hair, my friend Kate is coming on Tuesday and I had deadlines AGAIN and this kind of sucks but the thing is, I have a question:
How often do you wash your throw rugs? Like, the ones in bathrooms and stuff? Just curious.
(See you tomorrow!)

Once a month? But only because of the dog hair. I’d probably never think to do it otherwise…
See you TUESDAY!!!!!!!!

Because my kids have the aim of drunken sailors on the wavy seas, I am often forced to wash mine every week. I know. I don’t get how they miss a giant hole directly in front of them, either.

Every two weeks, I’d say. Ours are all annoyingly light colored so it’s harder to mask the dirt. Also, we throw them in with our towels.
4. Dani | July 18th, 2010 at 9:52 pm
Bathroom ones I was every couple of months. The other ones around the house way more often but I don’t know maybe every four to six weeks.

I don’t keep a throw rug in the bathroom. I have two cotton mats used only for shower exiting, we rotate them. They get washed every couple of days.
Kitchen throw rugs get washed much less often, unless I’m in one of my huge anxiety freakout modes, then they’ll get washed every couple of days.
I’m kind of realizing I’m not a good person to ask. Unless you want to clean like you have a huge anxiety problem, that is.

WASH them? Did you spill something on them?
7. NGS | July 18th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
We have a cotton mat in the bathroom I probably wash once a month or so. Or every other month. You know – when there’s room in a load of laundry.

i shake out our cotton bathroom rug once a week, but it gets washed way less often. every three or four months i guess. after reading the other comments that doesn’t seem like a lot. but we have no pets and no kids and remove our shoes at the door…
9. kakaty | July 18th, 2010 at 10:20 pm
um, when I happen to think about it when I’m standing in the bathroom and can pick it up right away and do something about it. So, every couple of months? (they do get vacuumed weekly, though)
10. Jamie | July 18th, 2010 at 10:42 pm
if there isn’t a non-skid backing made of rubber or some plastic, you should be able to toss them into the washer on HOT HOT HOT (to disinfect) with some oxiclean/detergent and call it a day. i always air dry mine, but only b/c i’m completely anal about them remaining their original size. because my world would obv. be turned upside down by a shower mat that is randomly 1″ smaller on all sides than it was last week. but that’s just me.
11. Heather | July 18th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
Two weeks at the longest because by then I can visibly see the dirt on them.
12. mischasone | July 18th, 2010 at 11:49 pm
I have a big carpet square in my bathroom which gets vacuumed weekly but thats it – the bath mat on the other hand goes in the wash weekly.

Wait. We’re discussing bathroom rugs when we could be learning about what happened to Sunny?? Do tell, please!
14. Suebob | July 19th, 2010 at 12:23 am
It was less often, then there was the mistake of buying new ones in soft butter yellow so, now – once a week.
15. Carla Hinkle | July 19th, 2010 at 12:41 am
Anything washable that lives in the bathroom (towels, mats, cotton rugs) gets washed once a week. In HOT HOT HOT water. Otherwise I get the heebie-jeebies.
16. Shelly | July 19th, 2010 at 6:50 am
Once a month or every other month. Not nearly enough (esp reading these comments). I find it to be a pain in the ass, plus the more I wash them, the shabbier they look.
17. Dr. Maureen | July 19th, 2010 at 7:48 am
Wash the what now?
Back when we had a bathroom rug, I washed it every few months probably. Which is probably gross. But then there was an Incident involving the potty, and I’ll spare you the details but we no longer have a bathroom rug.
18. Christine | July 19th, 2010 at 8:16 am
We don’t have any in the bathroom because they gross me out. We just use a cotton type towely thing, that gets done probably every couple of days in rotations or we will just use a towel.
We have one in the kitchen, but it’s a wool type thing, we vacuum it, and every now and then I take it outside and beat it, which is always fun, but I end up being thoroughly grossed out and covered in dust. The other day the cat threw up on it, so I hosed it off and left it to dry in our yard.
How is Sunny doing? I saw your FB status the other day, and the poor girl. I guess if doggy Xanax wasn’t already going to use, it will be now, eh. Bah. What a jerk to leave their dog off leash like that.
19. H | July 19th, 2010 at 8:21 am
We have white cotton rugs in the bathrooms so those are washed whenever they look like they need it or when company is coming. Other rugs are washed when they appear dirty, but they are darker colors so it isn’t as often, or if I know something disgusting landed on them. We shake or vacuum them every few days, though, thanks to our new dog, which we should have named The Shedder.
Poor Sunny! I suspect she’s already asked for Prozac!
20. Robin | July 19th, 2010 at 8:39 am
We don’t have any right now, but back in my throw rug glory days, I washed them every other week.
21. AndreAnna | July 19th, 2010 at 8:40 am
Poor Sunny Rubenstein (and I actually say her full name like that in my head every time).
Every couple of weeks I wash the throw rugs, usually on the Big Washing Day with all the comforters and bedding.
22. MinivanSoapbox | July 19th, 2010 at 9:11 am
I usually wash the bathroom rugs when I walk into the bathroom and go “Ewww Gross!”
23. Artemisia | July 19th, 2010 at 9:52 am
Oh, Sunny! I do hope she is okay. Damn, the timing. I am sure the attack wasn’t relaxing. I am so sorry!
I wash my rugs about once a month.
24. Deb | July 19th, 2010 at 9:58 am
I wash my bathroom rugs once a week. I was pretty grossed out by the people who wash less often, but then I thought maybe their husbands have better aim?
My mother only SHAKES her rugs out on the porch, to which I say EW, YOU ARE FLINGING DRIED PEE POWDER ALLOVER YOURSELF.
25. Elle | July 19th, 2010 at 10:12 am
Um…hmmm….you’re supposed to wash them? I mean at least once a month. Yeah, that’s it.
26. Sheila | July 19th, 2010 at 10:34 am
You can wash rugs?? I vacuum, but wash like in the washing machine? Doesn’t that make everything else smell like rubber? I have only a single rug in front of the sink in the bathroom, and thats it, so maybe thats not as gross as never washing one in front of the shower?
27. Katie | July 19th, 2010 at 10:36 am
Bathroom rugs once a month. The one that is right outside the kids’ tub may get it a little more often because they are splashers and it tends to get a mildewy smell. Kitchen and entry rugs every other month (is that gross?). I vacuum all of them weekly though.
28. Sam | July 19th, 2010 at 11:22 am
Pretty often, actually. Maybe every 2 weeks or so. Not that I’m a clean freak or even like, really good at housekeeping. It’s just that I have a 3 year old with a penis, and most time his aim is very far off.
Plus bathroom rugs just sort of wig me out.
29. Li | July 19th, 2010 at 11:26 am
OMG, reading most of these comments, steam mop love aside, i am clearly a pig. my scary answer is: in the bathroom: when blood, make-up, toothpaste, or some other substance i can’t just sort of comb out lands on them.
30. Home Sweet Sarah | July 19th, 2010 at 11:35 am
Uhh…Never…
I suppose if I had REAL bathmats, as opposed to the cheap ones I got on sale that get all bent and crinkly when washed, then I’d wash them maybe once a month? Once every two months?
31. Kerri Anne | July 19th, 2010 at 12:32 pm
Wait, I should be washing my throw rugs?
Does vacuuming not count as washing?
Hmmm…
(So glad Sunny is OK!)
32. Vicki | July 19th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
Heh, how long until I think ‘hmm, maybe those should be washed’ or how long until I actually do it? Probably every 4-6 months. Although, the kitchen one’s been getting much more washer time since we got kittens a couple months ago – one of them likes to pull his food onto it and play with it there.
33. Caitlin | July 19th, 2010 at 2:08 pm
Well, we only have a tub mat that (in our teeeeny little bathroom) gets hung over the side of the tub when no one is showering. It gets washed when the white part starts looking dingy and I start to feel like maaaaybe I need to hide it from view of the bathroom-using guests lest they think I DO NOT CARE about the cleanliness of my tub mat!
Thanks for reminding me, by the way, it’s looking a touch dirt-ay.
34. Kristen | July 19th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Gee, this is one of those questions when you definitely go and read the other comments before commenting yourself!
We wash our bathroom rugs every 2-3 weeks and vaccuum in between. My kitchen throw rugs get washed less often than that, but probably should be more often (although, we do take our shoes off at the door, so the ick factor on our floors is at somewhat of a minimum).
So, why do you ask???
35. amandapm | July 19th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
Once every two-three weeks. Unless they have a mysterious coconut smell – in that case, more often.
36. jenna mccarthy | July 19th, 2010 at 4:21 pm
Gotta say I’m with the toothpaste/make-up lady. They’re BATH MATS for the love of God, not place mats. We stand on them with our wet, mostly clean feet for the singular purpose of not slipping and falling on our asses (as if into a pool?). Unless there’s visible schmeg, why waste the 50 gallons of water to launder them?*
(*I realize that by writing this, nobody is ever going to come to one of dinner parties ever again, are they? I swear I’m a clean-freak, honestly. But BATH mats.)
37. Kristabella | July 19th, 2010 at 4:39 pm
I don’t have a rug in the bathroom, just a smaller, hotel-like towel to put down when you step out. That gets washed every 2 weeks or so. I figure it’s generally clean since you’re stepping on it when you’re freshly washed.
The other throw rug is in the kitchen. That I very rarely wash, usually when the cats puke on it.
And back when I paid to do laundry in my apartment, I never washed throw rugs. I would wait until I went to my brother’s house and do them there.
38. agirlandaboy | July 19th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
Um…once. About two and a half years ago we decided our bathmat was dirty, so we washed it and laid it on the front porch to dry, and that is where it has been ever since. *shamed*
39. Diane | July 19th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
I’m with Jenna — it’s just touching my feet, and I only eat with my feet SOMETIMES, so I’m just not that worried about it. A few times a year, when there’s room in a light load of towels. Or if there is some sort of incident.
In the probably NOT AT ALL related camp, about the coconut smell, is there any chance it could be from the coconut oil you recently started cooking with?
