What I Got

March 28th, 2011

So as it turns out, the great sleeping disaster was so obviously some kind of crazy language explosion that I feel STUPID in retrospect. A few days after she stopped sleeping, she started busting out full sentences, on one occasion even singing me the “Party In My Tummy” song from Yo Gabba Gabba completely unprompted. There are countless other examples of Stuff She’s Learned This Week, including, unfortunately, the phrase, “Holy crap!” which was uttered in the car after seeing something particularly startling and promptly repeated, over and over again.

Also repeated and learned was, “We’re going to get booze!” as I playfully told her that’s why we were going to Trader Joe’s. “We get BOOZE!” she parroted cheerfully. “Booze!”

I am carefully curbing my use of expletives, but instead, I am teaching my toddler other, equally awful words and habits and oh God, in some ways it was so much easier when all she could do was lay there like a bump on a pickle.

ANYWAY, did I TELL you that Adam and I booked a trip, just the two of us? To … well, it’s to Las Vegas, for a terrifyingly long time, considering it’s Las Vegas and also, we’re going to be away from our kid for SIX DAYS. And yes, as I mentioned, that’s a long time for VEGAS!-type activities, but when you consider that we’re parents who routinely get up at the crack of dawn so that our offspring can bang on a snare drum and crash cymbals while singing and playing the kazoo, and so help me, people, if ALL WE GET TO DO is lay in bed and read books and watch TV and take long, uninterrupted baths, IT WILL BE A RAGING SUCCESS. YOU MUST TRUST ME ON THIS.

Incidentally, the Caribbean and/or some other locales were considered and hoped for, but ultimately Jonna, Practical Budgeter, decided that no matter how awful a year we’d had, money must be saved, and this is an easy save.

Practicality blows sometimes.

Who doesn’t blow, however, are my parents, who are coming here to stay with Sam the entire time we’re gone. And my friends, who have promised to help them and hang out with Sam and her friends and keep life normal for everyone. Well, for Sam, anyway. Can I get an amen for my parents? Because, seriously. I am so lucky. Seriously.

I am also sick and fearful and worried about being away from Sam, not because I think she’s going to be mistreated or in trouble or ANYTHING, because after all they are my PARENTS and are generally awesome, but because … oh, Sam. My little lumpkin. She’s so much fun right now — talkative and funny, snuggly and madly in love with her mama — that I think about being away from her and I feel sick. At least one moment every day, I think, well, this: this is why I had kids.

And yet, I know it’s good for us, and I also know that the next time we do this will probably be the twelfth day of never, because if we DO have a second kid, let’s be honest, I won’t want to leave THAT one until s/he is at least two, and by then, Sam could be FIVE and in KINDERGARTEN and LET US ALL PAUSE TO HYPERVENTILATE HERE, and you see why I can’t think of a situation that far into the future without throwing up.

Oh, and finally: My sister’s surgery went awesome. She’s home already, two days earlier than they thought she’d be. It was entirely successful, there’s nothing wrong with her — well, except for feeling like ass and you know, missing part of a major organ — and can I get an AMEN?

That’s all I got. I hope you have an awesome Tuesday.

    Speech explosion, yay!

Vegas (or anywhere really) YAY! Although, yes, Vegas for long stretches is…exhausting. (My MIL lives there. I was going to say more, but I think that explains it all yes?). But a vacation? With sleeping? And maybe no tantrums (depending on how much you guys gamble and lose!)? Sounds like a dream.

I know what you mean! I’m going away for the weekend (2.5 days) and I’m already worried about how he will be when I’m gone! Will his daddy hear him in the morning? What will he do when I’m not there to tuck him in? It’s only two nights and I’d have made it more if I had time off work, but goodness, I know he’ll be fine! And probably a little clingy when I return.

The only problem with Vegas is the temptation to get out and Do! All! The! Things! Trust me, the books in bed is a generally better idea. I like Vegas in small doses and it is difficult to get in small doses, because everything is so far away (even the casino next door is a mile away because of the HUGENESS). As a sensitive person, I recommend the pool. bed, short excursions, bed, massage, pool, repeat. Oh, and booze.

Suebob: My plan is pool, spa, bed, books, booze. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Hi Jonna-You know me as dogscatsandme on Twitter. As I mentioned to you, I live here in Vegas. My one concern for you is when are you coming here because most of the resort pools are not quite open yet. We’ve had a cool Spring (60-70) (please remember it’s all relative, that’s cool)…so be prepared for the pools to be a bit cool.Everything should be opening this week though. We are just hitting and staying at 80 this week (equivalent to the 1st day u can go without a sweatshirt in Boston) :) Have fun! Be sure to leave some $ behind so that my car registration fees might go down huh? (kidding! kinda)

    AMEN!
(And my fil is being penciled in for surgery, so we’ll take that as a good sign & hope for your sis’s shortened recovery time for him, but more likely 8 weeks)
Also, totally with Suebob, but don’t forget food! Amazing, amazing food. I booked a trip (first time for both of us) to Vegas for our 3rd anniversary & dude, we went to bed sooo early, but probably spent 3 times as much money on food as anything else. Totally recommend Mon Ami Gabi for breakfast or lunch and Del Monico’s for a divine dinner.
Enjoy! You guys deserve a break, even if you will miss Sam desperately.

We went to Mexico for a week when my son was about Sam’s age and yes it was hard and yes I cried like once a day, BUT I have to tell you, it was almost as exciting on the way home from vacation as it was on the way there. I could not wait to see my baby. It was a nice change from the usual “OMG I’ll do anything not to have to go back to the real world” feeling you usually have at the end of a vacation.

You’ll love it and you’ll have a great time and you’ll be SO GLAD you went!

  • 8. H  |  March 29th, 2011 at 9:25 am

If you’re like me, accommodating the practical side enhances vacation happiness so I hope you’ll relax, enjoy and get a tiny thrill that you’re having a great time while spending less money!

    Have a wonderful trip!

Mar is right about Mon Ami Gabi. You can pretend you’re in Paris. If Paris had a giant entertaining fountain right across the street (at the Bellagio).

My son started saying “Holy crap!” over and over this weekend. My husband and I look accusingly at each other, but it’s probably both our faults. I don’t know how to stop it. My son gets such joy out of saying it over and over at top volume. We’ve been trying the “ignore approach” so that we don’t give it any power, but I’m not sure that’s working. Sigh. You are living my parent dream: hotel room, sleep, room service, pool, booze. This is the only fantasy I’ve had since becoming a mom two years ago. This is only slightly disappointing to my husband.

We are going on a cruise in May and will be leaving our two-year old twins for six days also. As much as I can’t wait to eat, sleep, read, and be extremely lazy without two toddler behinds planted in my lap…damn, I will miss those girls. They are just now hitting a stage of asking/crying for me when I am gone, so that should be, um, interesting for my mom and my MIL. (Isn’t it indescribably wonderful to have family willing to help out??)

You know how you read someone’s blog all the time, for months, and you laugh and you cry and then all this crappy stuff happens to them all at once and you feel terrible for them and then comes a post when a bunch of things are going right (Who cares if it’s Vegas? You’ll be alone! Just the two of you! With your daughter well cared for!) and you just think YES UNIVERSE THANK YOU.

    Yeah. That.

  • 13. jonniker  |  March 29th, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Jenna, I really don’t know what to say except that your comment made my day, and I’m just … I’m really lucky. Thank you for saying that. I may also be tearing up, for real.

  • 14. Jen  |  March 29th, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Aside from the repeating everything we say part, it’s pretty freaking awesome when they start talking all the time, right? Yesterday A and I had a full on conversation about school buses. Awesome.

Vegas, baby! I’ve never been, but I’m sure you guys will have a blast. I’ve yet to do an overnight away from Avery (I KNOW. OMG, she is TWO. It’s TIME.) but I am planning on it before the baby comes.

This is more of a Twitter comment, but all of your Stephen King talk is making me want to read one of his books (never have) but I don’t know if I am brave enough!

We have lots of spas here in Vegas- and shopping. Oh heavens, the shopping. And food! I hardly ever go to the strip, and there’s lots of childless relaxing stuff to do!

I’m so glad to hear your sister is doing well!

Enjoy your Vegas trip! You deserve the best!

I LOVE Vegas! I went last month for a conference and was totally content to eat room service and stare out the windows! So so pretty!

My hubby and I went to Vegas for 5 days for our 10th anniversary. It was great. I also totally recommend Mon Ami Gabi…it was one of the best memories from that trip. That was the first time we left our kids for that long and to travel that far away from them. It was hard, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Just remember the time difference when you call home :)

  • 19. Christine  |  March 30th, 2011 at 8:27 am

AMEN! on behalf of your sister. I have never been to Vegas, but I imagine just being away and relaxing will do you a world of good. Plus you could always get mushrooms and go watch Cirque du Soleil. So there’s that!

  • 20. Lynnette  |  March 30th, 2011 at 8:50 pm

Hooray for you, getting to take a trip! I just weaned my 19-month-old a couple weeks ago, and up until recently, it was emotionally difficult for me to leave her for even half of a day. Now that there is zero physical dependence, it’s suddenly less traumatizing for me. All I need now is someone to take her. Come on, Grandmas, which one of you wants to fly 2000 miles to monopolize her?

We actually took her to Vegas when she was 6 months old and stayed at the Bellagio. I was a big fan of the room service and someone else cleaning up after us.

Also, when we go to Trader Joe’s, she yells “BEER! BEER! BEER! STICKERS! BEER!” It’s a party.

i’m a testament to the fact that really good things can happen in vegas. i went there with my bff when our trip to turkey fell through. we indulged in pool and spa time in the cheap heat that is vegas. (and then i met my future husband. and then we were married four months later.) anyway, have a most excellent trip and i’m happy to hear the good news re: your sister.
