It’s my VOICE, y’all
October 12th, 2011
So, because I am lazy and also do whatever Jennie does, I jumped on the bandwagon and did the, uhhh, vlog thing. But ONLY to demonstrate what I actually look/sound like for people who will be meeting me for the first time. And also, to make me easier to recognize in Target.
I also think that’s a KICKASS screen shot, don’t you? It is also VERY LONG and I am VERY SORRY. I am TALKY.
Here are the notes:
Say the following words:
Aunt, route, wash, oil, theatre, iron, salmon, caramel, fire, water, sure, data, ruin, crayon, toilet, New Orleans, pecan, both, again, probably, spitting image, Alabama, lawyer, coupon, mayonnaise, syrup, pajamas, caught
And answer these questions:
What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that curls into a ball when you touch it?
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you say to address a group of people?
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
What is the thing you use to change the TV channel?

Draw? He says draw? I DON’T UNDERSTAND!!
Also, I somehow totally forgot you were coming to the Blathering, and now I’m SO EXCITED to meet you… because I’m like that…
The coke thing… that’s exactly how it happens!
“You want a coke?”
“Yes”
“What kind?”
“Sprite.”
GAH!!
2. Raven | October 13th, 2011 at 12:06 am
Okay so, I totally ran immediately to twitter about the whole caramel thing but I say it the “proper” way as well as the other way. Usually the “proper” way when I am referring to a thing that has caramel in it…like a caramel apple or a Caramel Macchiato.
On the whole coke as an all encompassing name for carbonated beverages thing. It’s basically “Hey, I have some cokes in the fridge” and then there will be an array of all the carbonated beverages. Or, “Hey we water, tea or cokes, do you want anything? Then you go on to name the individual varieties you have.
3. Raven | October 13th, 2011 at 12:13 am
Gah! “Hey we *HAVE water, tea or cokes, do you want anything?”
I hate when I leave words out of a comment.
4. Jennie | October 13th, 2011 at 12:24 am
“I call them dead.” OH I LAUGHED. Should I be ashamed that I did? Whatever. I love you, you’re adorable, I wish I spoke half as adorably as you.
I also love that Tami Taylor got a shout out in your video.
5. Manda | October 13th, 2011 at 12:30 am
I think some people say “Alabamer” instead of Alabama. Not ME, obviously I am VERY refined and call the cart a buggy and a sunshower the devil beating his wife. HAR!
6. Brenna | October 13th, 2011 at 12:52 am
I really enjoyed watching that! And now I have to tell you the differences.
FYI, I was born in Colorado but grew up and currently reside in Arizona.
I say it Care-ah-mel.
I say pe-cahn instead of pe-CAN.
I call them potato bugs.
I called all my grandparents Grandma/Grandpa. For my kids, my parents are Nonie and Grandpa, and my husband’s parents are Grandpa [first name] and Grandma [first name]. Not sure how that happened.
Never even heard of a sunshower before now. It’s just rain here.
And remote. I think clicker is hilarious!
I’m also curious how else one would say toilet. And what else is t.p.ing called?
7. Lara | October 13th, 2011 at 1:09 am
You are so cute. And totally how I pictured you, but also totally not. I know that makes little sense.
I saw care-a-mel and buggy. Do you still like me? (Unless it’s a carmel apple. Then it’s carmel. I don’t know.)
I actually think you don’t have much of an accent, compared, of course, to me, who has no accent at all.
8. Lara | October 13th, 2011 at 1:26 am
Oooh, I forgot to say: I am an accent picker upper too. Like, I kind of embarrass myself with it. Sometimes I pick them up from tv shows, even. Ugh.
9. Nothing But Bonfires | October 13th, 2011 at 1:46 am
I could listen to you talk forever! I don’t know how to say this without sounding creepy, but I really like your voice. Okay, turns out there IS no way to say that.
10. Tammie | October 13th, 2011 at 7:35 am
After two years in nw England I haven’t picked up an accent but do use some of the idioms, like roundabout instead of traffic circle, rubbish, brilliant instead of awesome, although I use both.
Myles is in school full time and learning to read, which they teach phonetically here so he is finally picking up a little accent. He’s having trouble with vowel sounds because they pronounce the “a” sound like o in ostrich and he’s really getting confused. So I expect he’ll be speaking like a proper British chap before the year is out
Hope you all have a great time in Austin!
11. Margaret | October 13th, 2011 at 7:57 am
I grew up in MA but don’t have the accent. My mother-in-law says ‘the john’ instead of toilet or bathroom and she grew up in Winchester, MA. Also I say syrup like Sir-up, less like sear-up. I loved listening to my grandfather who had a Maine accent.
12. Diane | October 13th, 2011 at 8:00 am
I’m not just an accent-picker-upper, but I’m an INFLECTION picker-upper. If I’m around someone enough, I start talking the way they talk. And I don’t even mean to! It’s horrible and embarrassing and I have to REALLY TRY to maintain my own way of speaking. I just start hearing their voices in my head, maybe? Who knoooows, but it doesn’t make any damn sense. My husband does it, too, so I don’t know what that says about us as a COUPLE, but it seems to work when we’re together because we just talk like ourselves. We would TOTALLY be Madonna. I’ve always been defensive of her for that reason. Well, in that respect. Not in any of her other crazy ways. ON YOUR OWN WITH THOSE, MADGE.
Why do people call her that? Do not get it.
ANYWAY. I have to agree with Lara in that you are exactly how I imagined but also not. I think I always give people a lower-pitched voice in my head, and then you all have these lovely higher voices, and I’m shocked. It’s shocking! I think I’d like to see you do a vlog about something when you’re good and riled up, because I have a Riled Up Jonna voice in my head (a vlog on One Day, haaaaa, would demonstrate this perfectly) and I would LOVE to hear that voice.
You are lovely, though. Just lovely. And you don’t look 35! Not even close! (In the good direction. In case that was unclear.)
13. Life of a Doctor's Wife | October 13th, 2011 at 8:26 am
Daddy long leggER? I have never heard that before!
You are adorable – and hilarious – by the way. The Tami Taylor thing cracked me up.
14. Sarah Lena | October 13th, 2011 at 8:36 am
I am going to hug the mess outta you in Texas. You are SO CUTE. And I LIKE talky!
15. kakaty | October 13th, 2011 at 8:44 am
“I call them dead.” I’m laughing so hard right now and really wish I was going to be in Austin to meet you for real.
16. el-e-e | October 13th, 2011 at 8:46 am
Love hearing you talk!! Also, your makeup looks bee-yoo-tee-ful!
Okay, to explain the South and the Cokes… I do NOT agree that people say, “I want a Coke.” what kind? “A Sprite.” No. That’s not it. It’s just in the plural. Like, “What will there be to drink?” “Oh, you know, Cokes, water, beer.” Cokes means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, etc. in that instance.
I’m not going to the Blathering (maybe never, sob), but think it would be fun to do this. Because I’m certain I DO have an accent, much as I hate to admit it.
(hi, I also almost never comment! love your blog!)
17. Heather R | October 13th, 2011 at 9:04 am
I have been sort of lurking for a while now….well, not totally, I did comment a couple times, but anyway, I am coming out of lurking to say you don’t sound anything like I thought you would! I didn’t realize I had assigned a “voice” to your writing, but I did! (I am real life friends with Dr. Maureen, BTW, which is how I found your blog)
Also, I say Care-a-mel and thought I was in the majority, I had no idea! I grew up in Maine and live in MA now. I don’t have much of an accent otherwise and mostly sound like you I think. To me, Car-a-mel sounds like the equivalent of tom-AH-to.
18. the grumbles | October 13th, 2011 at 9:07 am
cute cute cute you. ditto on the caramel thing. and toilet? is there even another way? clicker makes me think that you’re 80. that’s totally my Grandma. heeee!
19. Barb | October 13th, 2011 at 9:48 am
I grew up in Philly my whole life and just a few years ago moved up the turnpike to a little town outside of Allentown. It’s totally wooder… wooder ice. So that makes me stand out a little bit here. Also, I can’t believe no one brought up cue-pon. Everyone says coo-pon and it makes my ears cringe.
20. Betsy | October 13th, 2011 at 10:22 am
You crack me up! Just had to tell you about a guy I used to work with who would say ter-let for toilet. He was a total hick and it actually grossed me out to hear him say it, but there you go…a different way to say toilet.
21. Olivia | October 13th, 2011 at 10:33 am
Brenna, I was raised in Colorado, too, so I’m with you on all but the potato bugs. I actually think those are different than what is described. In Texas, where my mother’s family is from, they are called rolly-polly bugs or pill bugs. Not sure I ever saw one in CO, but maybe I wasn’t paying attention. By the way, my grandmother had pecan trees in her yard in Texas and even she calls them pe-cahns, which is surprising because she also said Cuh-lor-ayda for Colorado.
22. Mama Bub | October 13th, 2011 at 10:35 am
So, this was shocking to me, because you sound nothing like I thought you might. NOTHING! It’s blowing my mind a little because I just watched Swistle’s vlog and she sounds EXACTLY like I imagined her.
All that said, this makes me very sad I won’t be meeting you in person next weekend.
23. Karen | October 13th, 2011 at 10:42 am
So cute! As I’ve been watching these videos I’m realizing there are things I switch back and forth on — caramel, New Orleans, pecan. I could go either way on those, and each time one comes out of my mouth I feel like I’ve said it wrong.
I laughed when I read, “to make me easier to recognize in Target.” I can think of at least two times when you tweeted about being at Target and I had just been there (same one; I’m local). And now if I saw you I’d feel compelled to run after you saying, “Jonna! Here’s a wagon to put your Sprite Coke in!” And as you tried to escape me I could shriek, “Slow down! I’m not wearing my tennies and I’m moving like caaaaramel!” (Because none of that would be scary for you, would it?)
24. Caitlin | October 13th, 2011 at 11:01 am
Jonna are you kidding me with this? All I could do while watching this was grin stupidly and think “Omg, it’s YOU! It’s you!” Because Jonna! It’s SO YOU! You have come to life, right off the page! I literally showed Zach and I was like “Look! Jonna did the vlog! And it’s like her blog has totally come to life right off the page! It’s totally her!”
Also, inexplicably, you sound nothing like I would have expected.
Goddamit. So mad about the Blathering because now I want to HUG YOU. (even more)
25. Sam | October 13th, 2011 at 11:05 am
Your voice is SO. CUTE.
Growing up in Wisconsin, one of my biggest peeves is “melk”!
26. Caitlin | October 13th, 2011 at 11:06 am
I mean, your VOICE doesn’t necessarily sound like what I expected (even though I heard you briefly on the radio that one time). I don’t know why. I think I maybe expected it to be deeper? You sound so SWEET. I don’t mean you’re NOT sweet, I just…oh god, nevermind.
27. Alison | October 13th, 2011 at 11:12 am
I agree with #17 and #12 up there, I’m a lurker and had assigned a lower tone, gravely situation in my head to you!
The higher pitch makes it hit so differently in my brain!
And I agree – I travel to foreign places and totally pick up the accent, inflection, etc – sad but true.
AND – where I’m from it typically is: Hey – do you want a coke? – “yeah, what kind do you have” – followed by the list of: coke, diet coke, sprite, etc – although as an adult I make a conscious effort to swap in soda or pop.
ANDx2 – over here in my area its… carmel that goes on a sundae, or carMEL the town…
28. Lawyerish | October 13th, 2011 at 11:18 am
The first time I heard your voice when you called me YEARS ago, I almost dropped the phone. You sounded so different from what I had imagined! And yet, now of course I can’t imagine your voice any differently.
I love how this little video captures YOU so perfectly. It’s just YOU, like we’re having a little chat. I miss you.
29. Kris Taylor | October 13th, 2011 at 11:30 am
I never heard longlegger. Im originally from MA and it’s a daddy longlegs. Thank you for pointing out that the majority of us do not speak like Good Will Hunting. Though thinking about it, I guess I do say melk. My issue comes from being married to a Brit. I now say “tom “ah”to” and “gare-aj” like my hubby and have been known to use words like “fancy” (What do you fancy for dinner?). or crisps instead of chips because chips now mean fries in my head. Not quite Madonna, but I definatley sound like some bizarro Boston/London hybrid.
30. Kris Taylor | October 13th, 2011 at 11:33 am
Oh and for the record, No one from Boston (or surrounding cities) refers to Boston as Beantown, NO ONE! (sorry pet peeve can you tell?)
31. Megan | October 13th, 2011 at 11:48 am
Ok, I am cracking UP at Karen’s comment about Target (perhaps b/c I just came from there…AGAIN), and I’m remembering that first time we ran into each other there.
Now I want to come play with you guys next weekend, wah. They’ll let a 37 week pregnant lady on a plane, right??
PS, we also don’t call Boston “Beantown”. Swear. (But I do say wicked wayyy too much.)
32. Megan | October 13th, 2011 at 11:49 am
HA! Kris beat me to the Beantown thing while I was watching your vlog. AGREEE!!
33. Rebecca (Bearca) | October 13th, 2011 at 12:00 pm
You talk just like I pictured, except I DID envision you having a Boston accent and YOU DO NOT. AT ALL. You are SUPER DUPER cute.
34. Dr. Maureen | October 13th, 2011 at 12:03 pm
My sister says “draw.” FYI, all you people who are wondering what she’s talking about, it’s how some people pronounce “drawer.” But I think it’s weird how siblings can have different accents.
My dad is from Somerville, and while you were saying, “No one talks like that!” I was thinking, “They do in Somerville,” and then you said “Well, they do in Somerville.” So. Ha! I agree.
Caramel is a word that I simply cannot decide how to pronounce. I honestly make a conscious choice each time I say it. I usually go with “car-a-mel” but sometimes say “car-mel.”
35. Li | October 13th, 2011 at 12:11 pm
OMG — MELK and DRAW. maddening. how does that happen? they should warn you that marrying massachusetts-born boys subjects you to that for a lifetime!
i loved this video. we want more video on the blog! it’s like meeting you for coffee, without the effort of actually, you know, making myself presentable! xo
36. Stacie | October 13th, 2011 at 12:16 pm
Could you be more adorable??? We would totally be IRL friends if we didn’t live 3000 miles away from each other. thanks for this vlog. It’s just what I needed today
37. agirlandaboy | October 13th, 2011 at 12:50 pm
I love that you copped to the Madonna thing. My SIL has lived in England for years and years and whips out “risAHtto” and “MObyle” (for cell phone) and refuses to acknowledge that she ever said anything different. Ha.
Also, it’s always nice to see your smiling face.
38. Devan | October 13th, 2011 at 1:08 pm
awesome. the end.
39. Julie K | October 13th, 2011 at 1:16 pm
That was fantastic! Well done! I heard just a bit of eastern seaboard in your “sure”. And you’re right–Cranston, is that even English?
40. Suzanne | October 13th, 2011 at 1:30 pm
I saw almost ALL THE THINGS the saw way you do, and not only that but I THINK the same things you do – like making fun of Madonna but then spending TWO DAYS with a British person (not even IN ENGLAND) and suddenly having an accent. I am RIDICULOUS.
I am doing this tonight, just because watching other people’s is so much fun.
41. Gaby | October 13th, 2011 at 1:36 pm
So cute! I’ll agree with the majority, I pictured you having a deeper voice. No reason for that, I just did.
I am from Illinois, and I have some very weird pronunciations for no discernible reason. I say “cran” for crayon. I say “soda” despite the fact that the regional thing is pop. I love the word dude and use it a lot (perhaps because I was born in CA?! I moved when I was three, though, so probably not). I say “gym shoes” even though most people say sneakers around here. And I say “pecon” for pecan and that just makes no damned sense whatsoever!
The idea of siblings pronouncing words differently as mentioned above is bizarre. One of my sisters says “ot dog” for hot dog. She drops the “H” like she’s speaking French or some such nonsense. I make fun of her for that.
I’m surprised one of the questions on your vlog list wasn’t “What do you call the thing you carry groceries out of the store in?” That’s always a contentious topic. I am firmly in the “bag” camp; others around here refer to “sacks.” Those people are wrong
42. alimartell | October 13th, 2011 at 2:23 pm
I, too, am shocked by how many people have never heard of a sunshower!
Also, I miss your face.
43. Reagan | October 13th, 2011 at 2:25 pm
Okay, a little rambly (rambley?), but I really enjoyed your voice! I promise this is a compliment- more higher-pitched/feminine than I expected!
44. linda | October 13th, 2011 at 2:35 pm
This is fascinating. I love how you talk. I’m from Ontario, but my brother and his wife just moved to Boston last fall and I was so excited to visit them and hear the famous accent, and i didn’t hear it at all while I was there. Disappointing, but a lovely city nonetheless.
Anyway, a few funny things I noticed. ‘Sneakers’ is a very American word. Canadians just call them ‘Running Shoes’. Of course, that means nothing to the accent conversation, I just thought it was an odd word. And toilet, I hate how Europeans, in particular will ask “Where is the toilet?’ It makes me cringe. I always have to reply “Do you mean the washroom?’ Although I noticed Americans seem to ask for the ‘bathroom’. Again, nothing to do with accents.
45. Miranda | October 13th, 2011 at 4:28 pm
Oh, I just love it. And your voice is adorable and familiar and I can’t wait to hear it in person next week!
46. samantha jo campen | October 13th, 2011 at 4:38 pm
You are adorable. You don’t sound funny at all but then again I’ve hung out with you in person. But still, I miss your voice and why aren’t we neighbors again?
47. jonniker | October 13th, 2011 at 5:00 pm
AHHH, you guys, my own blog locked me out from commenting until now! Thank you! THANK YOU! I feel like such a dork, as I think we all do when we catch ourselves on camera.
The voice thing is funny, because to me? MY VOICE IS DEEP AND GRAVELLY. In my head. Which is not how it sounds to other people.
Also, thanks, Maureen, for clarifying the “draw” thing. Yes, I forgot to say he says “draw” for “drawer”!
48. Elsha | October 13th, 2011 at 5:47 pm
Just a note on the cokes thing. My sister had a friend in high school who had just moved here (colorado) from Texas and she did exactly what you said. Do you want a coke? Yes. What kind?
The first time she asked, my sister was like, what do you mean what kind? And her friend proceeded to list the various kinds of soda she had.
49. H | October 13th, 2011 at 6:02 pm
It cracks me up that people thought your voice would be lower because that’s also what I expected! I love the word thing. Where I live, we drink pop and those spiders are daddy long legs. We have tennies, running shoes AND sneakers. My husband, who has lived in this area all his life, drinks MELK and sleeps on a PELLOW. Our whole family gives him a hard time about it!
It sounds like you bloggers are a fun group and will have a great time together. Enjoy!
50. Jessica | October 13th, 2011 at 6:34 pm
So, I totally wrote my Undergraduate Honors Thesis on this EXACT TOPIC (it’s title was “Accent and Dialect Modification and Reduction in Speech Language Pathology” or something like that)
Anyway, the way we pronounce words is called “dialectical differences”. Basically, when people who speak the same language pronounce thing differently, it’s a dialect. So a Southern Dialect, a Boston Dialect, a Jersey dialect, even an English or Irish dialect.
When someone speaks a language but their first language was something different, that’s an accent. So a French accent or Spanish accent or Indian accent.
And there really is not “right” or “wrong” way of pronouncing things. Me, personally, growing up on the Jersey Shore (literally on the other point of your NYC/Philly spectrum, an hour from each), I say worder (water) and the big city in NJ? That’s Nork. (Newark). When I was at school on Long Island, I noticed it a lot more.
But I was also a Speech Therapy major, so I paid attention to it.
And I was the dork who wrote 50 page thesis on the subject. And an almost equally long blog comment.
51. JCF | October 13th, 2011 at 6:57 pm
This was hilarious. Also, I have lived my entire life in Southern California, save 2 years when I lived in Rhode Island when I was in middle school. Let me tell you, that was some crazy kind of culture shock. My family COULD NOT understand a bunch of the people we met. Milkshake/cabinet, water fountain/bubbla, bathroom/lav, clams/quahogs, grocery cart/carriage, etc. It was a weird time in my life.
Also, daddy long leggER? I have never heard that in my life! Thanks for enlightening me!
52. kris | October 13th, 2011 at 7:10 pm
I LOVE IT! And you’re super adorable. I want to be IRL friends with you and your adorableness.
BUT I MUST KNOW — how do you guys pronounce ORANGE and HORRIBLE? Because those of us from the Northern New Jersey pronounce them in (what I’ve been told is) a weird way.
53. Kater | October 13th, 2011 at 7:26 pm
OMG, Jonna, you’re SO cute. I loved hearing your voice for real – you sound different in my head, ha ha – and I love your chatty little sense of humor.
Ok, I’m done now girl-crushing on you.
54. jonniker | October 13th, 2011 at 9:24 pm
OK, Kris: I say ORR-ange. Not ARR-ange. And FLOOR-ida. And I say horrible the way some people would say WHORE-ible?
Basically I pronounce the words with the word “or” in front of them. You?
55. Dr. Maureen | October 13th, 2011 at 9:55 pm
Augh! “Horrible” is the other word I can’t decide how to pronounce and must make a conscious decision each time I say it. Also, actually, “pecan.” Although with that one, I know it’s because I used to say “PEE-can” but then my southern SIL cringed in horror and forbade us all from saying it, so now I say “puh-CAHN” but it’s fake. Fake!
56. Kris Taylor | October 14th, 2011 at 10:11 am
Jonna- I say all those words the way you do. Neither one of my parents had a real heavy accent. My grandfather (steelworker at Quincy shipyard) did though. Pa-Day-dahs, Bat-trees the whole deal. In terms of my hubby, it’s just the words that are common that we use a lot that Ive coverted to his pronounciation…I dont think I could say the word garage or tomato the “American” way withough consciously thinking about it mainly because I;ve been hearing it the English way for 11 years,. It’s the same way, I havent used the word hamburger in 11 years, it’s “mince” So it’s this weird combo of pronounciation and word choice.
57. Deb | October 14th, 2011 at 12:21 pm
I love your hair. I had pictured you as having long blond hair for some reason.
I have actually heard some people call the toilet the “terlet”
Terlet! I ask you!
Also, government. My grandmother was from Boston and she said “guvmint” Only not very much V. Gummit, even.
58. Lippy | October 14th, 2011 at 12:40 pm
I also pick up accents, I moved to Minnesota and within a few weeks I had the nasally maam instead of mom going on. It is so awkward. Like your brother I say crick, can’t do creek. (unless is it Coldwater Creek, because who pay $50 for a shirt from Coldwater Crick?) Thanks for clearing up the sunshower thing. I thought maybe rainbow weather?
59. JudithNYC | October 14th, 2011 at 1:09 pm
You are cute! And funny, but we already knew about the funny part.
60. EmilysHollow | October 14th, 2011 at 1:51 pm
I think the “toilet” commentary may be my favorite.
61. Amy K | October 14th, 2011 at 2:10 pm
It was so fun watching the video! We already knew you’re hilarious, but it was great actually hearing the words coming out of your mouth.
I’m from St. Louis, so I grew up saying Q-pon and carmel and trained myself out of it because college friends laughed at me. Also, weird regional fact, in St. Louis all white people say aunt like ant, and all black people say aunt like awnt. Gym shoes were tennis shoes. Roly poly bugs were sow bugs. My father-in-law from Alabama says Alabama normally, but he pronounces Massachusetts like MassaTOOsetts. (Is he the only person on Earth who does that?) It’s pe-CAHN, remote, shopping cart. And St. Louisans say soda, but I was raised to say sodi (ee?), which is how my mom learned to say it from her dad who grew up in the Ozark mountains. I quickly changed to soda in elementary school when I realized that no one knew what I was talking about.
62. Gail Scibelli | October 14th, 2011 at 3:35 pm
At the risk of sounding totally superficial, can I just tell you that you look absolutely gorgeous? I haven’t seen you in a million years, but gosh, you look super radiant!
63. Maya | October 14th, 2011 at 4:04 pm
1. Thanks.
2. no comment on regional diction, I enjoy it
3. You are quite more sweet voiced then you “sound”(not that you sound mean, just funny/snarky) in my head, but that could be me, too.
4. Such pretty skin! Ah am jealous!
64. DCZia | October 14th, 2011 at 4:42 pm
You are so cute! And you speak more softly than you Tweet.
65. Jessica | October 14th, 2011 at 5:37 pm
Deep and gravelly? I was just going to say your voice is so light and sweet!
66. Rhi | October 14th, 2011 at 6:38 pm
I love this. Also: I feel like anyone who says car-a-mel is just trying to be fancy. Nobody REALLY says that.
Also, I need to do know how people pronounce Oregon.
67. Heather | October 14th, 2011 at 11:58 pm
I say a few of those things differently to you, but then I am from the southern hemisphere! I did mine tonight, in a hotel room with bad lighting and reflective glasses lol.
68. Kate | October 15th, 2011 at 10:48 am
Hilarious. I had to wait for DAYS to watch, because that just wasn’t appropriate for work. Actually, my hysterical laughter was the really inappropriate for work part. Wouldn’t you think I’d find it less funny, since I do know you? Somehow not.
Maybe I say y’all more now b/c of FNL as well. Of course, I’ve had a lot of good, Southern friends, so that’s probably the original reason.
But why must you be so relieved to have moved from the hellhole known as Vermont?
69. Ang | October 15th, 2011 at 11:44 pm
I totally get your comment about not everyone in Boston having the accent – same with Chicago, everyone is expecting “Da Bearz”, “Chicaga” with really flat a’s – but that’s really only more to the south. We all do say pop instead of soda though!
I’m also curious how people say the name of the state “Oregon” – I believe if you live there you say “organ”, two syllables – but around here everyone says it with 3 syllables.
And I think you have a lovely voice!
70. barbetti | October 17th, 2011 at 2:12 pm
I’m sad that I won’t be able to make this next Blathering, because you are hysterical. Not that I didn’t know this already from reading your blog, but your video blog (I have an aversion to the word VLOG) had me nearly ROFLMFAO. Definitely did the laughing my fat ass part, though.

73. jonniker | October 18th, 2011 at 10:39 pm
Leigh, I TOTALLY laughed, because of course I have.
Penny: HAA. I don’t think I can disagree with you there, particularly in the beginning. Not sure it stays that way all the way through though. However, there are far worse things than Jessica Simpson.
74. mel | October 19th, 2011 at 9:59 am
You are wicked cute. haha. and so is Jessica Simpson (love her) I actually grew up in Somerville and live in Charlestown, but wicked is probably the only thing I say that makes that obvious. I pronounce my R’s. I say soda. People I’ve met through blogs/twitter think I sound like steriotypical The Town/Good Wil Hunting, people I meet here think I sound like I’m from New York. Go figure.
Anyhow. super cute. and I don’t know where Adam gets melk from…..I’ve never noticed that before.
75. Anu | October 19th, 2011 at 1:54 pm
I’m from Lexington (mostly, my parents dragged us all over the world, the other half of my life is “Mostly French-Canadian”…anyway) and the traditional Boston accent was really heavy in several of the Metrowestish suburbs when I was growing up there in the 90s. It was definitely dying in Lexington by the time we got there in 1990, but there were pockets of it left even amongst my classmates at LHS, although I’m sure by now it’s completely non-existent. Even back then towns most people in towns surrounding Lexington like Arlington, Bedford, Waltham, Burlington had strong Boston accents…but not the kids from Concord and Carlisle for instance.
I strongly suspect the Boston accent disappeared out of the Metrowest suburbs as the towns grew increasingly more affluent and people sold their houses and left.

I say “melk,” too, despite my best efforts to get rid of it. It’s a really sticky little accent, for some reason! I always thought it was a midwestern thing more than east-coast, though.
I am also a total accent picker-upper. I’ve lived in 8 different states, and have picked up stuff from all of them, which cracks people up sometimes, like when I say something like “It’s wicked hot today, y’all.” And on top of that, my boyfriend’s Australian, so I’m also picking up his Australian-isms — loo instead of bathroom, takeaway instead of carryout, bloke instead of dude/guy/man, tip truck instead of garbage truck, and so on. It makes me feel a little affected, but I swear it’s not on purpose. And sometimes the Australian-isms are kind of awesome, like calling someone fig-jam, which is short for “F–k I’m Good, Just Ask Me). HA!

Ummm, so I have to confess that I think I say melk and didn’t even know it was a thing, or wrong..! And am pretty embarrassed and wonder if people have noticed..? Oh lord.
I have to say, as I’m sure many people have already commented, you are just too adorable! I was not expecting this amount of cuteness. Maybe it’s because you are just so expressive in your writing, and without knowing about your adorable facial expressions and innocuous tone, I guess I was expecting someone a bit more…hmm how to say this without being insulting (because I don’t mean it that way at all!)…obnoxious? High strung? Eek I’m pretty sure you won’t take that the wrong way because I follwo you on twitter and know that you are aware and can laugh about how people sometimes don’t know how to take you.. Anyway, just had to comment and say I loved the vlog, and that seeing everyone do them has just made me love you all more!

I’m from MA and never, ever thought I had an accent until I went to Texas on vacation and so many people asked if we were from England! They found the way we talked so very amusing. Something similar also happened when we went to France too. Many people asked us if we were English (no one guessed American right away!) Maybe it’s the “aunt” vs. “ant” thing. It does sounds rather British in a way. The whole accent thing is so interesting! I loved your video!
